Director of Engineering

Kaleidoo.ai, one of Israel’s leading AI startups, is growing fast and we’re looking for a visionary, hands-on team leader – front-end to help drive our expansion. Our core platform is a highly scalable, microservices-based architecture that powers our next-generation AI and enterprise solutions. This complexity makes the role crucial for bridging the strategic vision with the day-to-day operations.

We are seeking an experienced and visionary Director of Engineering to serve as the operational leader for our entire R&D department. Reporting directly to the CTO, you will be responsible for translating the technical strategy into efficient execution, ensuring timely, high-quality delivery across our complex, distributed system, and managing our talented team of Leads.

· Strategic Partnership: Work closely with the CTO to shape the long-term technological vision, influence architectural decisions for On-Prem, Cloud & Hybrid environments, and build a world-class engineering brand.

· Cross-Functional Alignment: Act as the primary bridge between Engineering and Product/Design/Algorithms teams. Ensure technical feasibility of next-gen AI solutions and manage resource allocation to meet business targets.

· Lead the Leaders: Directly manage, mentor, and empower our technical leadership layer and dozens of engineers engineer (Backend, Frontend, DevOps, and QA Leads). Foster a culture of ownership, technical excellence, and continuous growth within the R&D organization.

· Operational Excellence & Delivery: Own the end-to-end engineering lifecycle. Translate high-level strategic goals into actionable roadmaps and ensure predictable, high-quality delivery of complex features in a fast-paced startup environment.

· Engineering Health & Cost Governance: Guarantee the high availability, stability, and reliability of the distributed system. Proactively manage technical debt and optimize cloud infrastructure costs for maximum efficiency.

·  Leadership & people management: mentoring, coaching, hiring, and empowering employees.

·Senior Leadership Experience: Minimum 5 years of engineering leadership, including 3+ years in a Director/Engineering Manager capacity, with proven experience directly leading R&D leadership teams (Backend, Frontend, DevOps, and QA Leads) and managing organizations of dozens of engineers.

System Architecture & Scale: Demonstrated accountability for managing, designing, and scaling highly available, microservices-based distributed systems.

AI/ML Domain: 

·  Solid familiarity with the AI/ML domain.  

·  Advantage: Hands-on experience with LLMs and RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) architectures.

Big Data & Pipelines: Proven experience building and optimizing large-scale Big Data architectures and data pipelines.

Core Technology Stack:

· Programming: Hands-on experience with Python (not required to write production code).

· Cloud & Orchestration: Deep practical expertise with Kubernetes, Docker, and cloud platforms (AWS/GCP/AZURE). 

· Databases: Solid technical proficiency with diverse database technologies, including SQL DB, MongoDB and Redis.

· Messaging Systems: Experience with Pub/Sub messaging systems (e.g., RabbitMQ, Kafka).

· Workflow Orchestration: Experience with workflow orchestration infrastructure for pipeline management (e.g., Airflow, Temporal).

· Leadership Excellence: Outstanding interpersonal skills with a proven ability to lead, motivate, and inspire multidisciplinary teams.

· Professional Mindset: Can-do attitude, excellent analytical skills, and demonstrated ability to thrive under pressure and shifting priorities. 

· Quality Standards: High standards for code quality, testing, and performance optimization.

· Academic Background: B.Sc./M.Sc. in Computer Science or related technical field
