PhD Positions in Biological and Bioinspired Materials
Ben-Gurion University of the Negev
The Multiscale Biological and Functional Materials Lab at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev is seeking two highly qualified PhD students to join our research group. Our research centers on uncovering the fundamental design principles by which hierarchical biological materials achieve exceptional mechanical performance, and on elucidating the multiscale mechanisms that govern strength, toughness, and deformation in natural and synthetic structural composites.
The first project will investigate site-specific mechanical properties in biological structural composites. This research will involve mapping local properties, identifying deformation mechanisms across length-scales, and correlating composition and structural organization with macroscale mechanical response.
The second project will examine the properties of bioinspired 3D-printed structures. Using additive manufacturing approaches such as stereolithography, this project will focus on the design, fabrication, and mechanical characterization of architected materials that incorporate controlled anisotropy, geometry, and hierarchical organization to achieve tailored performance.
Applicants should hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in materials engineering, mechanical engineering, biomaterials, biophysics, chemical engineering, or related fields. Prior experience in electron microscopy, mechanical testing of materials, CAD and mechanical design, image analysis, or 3D printing will be considered an advantage. We seek motivated, independent candidates with a strong interest in structure–property relationships, fracture mechanics, and advanced fabrication.
