Manager, Research and Development

General Robotics a Sig Sauer company is a leading developer and supplier of advanced defense systems to special forces. Our systems provide remote situational awareness for keeping special forces out of harm's way.

Position Summary

The Research & Development Manager is responsible for technical leadership and management of engineering staff to create innovative Advanced Defense Systems which meet system requirements. Responsibilities include working closely with direct reports, foster a team-oriented working environment, provide coaching to team members, and supporting other teams and R&D objectives as needed. This management position in the R&D department is generally intended for multi-disciplinary engineers with a significant relevant work experience which includes project management responsibilities. The Research & Development Manager is an active member of the R&D management team and must collaborate effectively with other departments, including system management and operations. In addition, they will be required to interact effectively with Executive Management and customers.

Job Duties And Responsibilities

• Responsible for setting R&D goals and leading the team to meet the goals.
• Managerial responsibility for direct reports, including electrical, embedded, software, and mechanical engineers and support staff.
• Empowers the team and provides support to identify problems and establish solutions.
• Responsible for multiple development programs, ensuring that system requirements are met with robust, cost-effective designs.
• Responsible for assigning tasks and establishing success criteria.
• Review and approve team lead designs to ensure applicable standards are met and documented showing acceptable results.
• Review the results of design analyses as well as the methods used.
• Prepares system level design reviews and presents them to the executive teams.
• Exercise sound judgement in assessing the validity of assumptions made.
• Responsible for ensuring the required analyses for assigned projects are completed.
• Review and approve test plans, ensuring that they are logical and thorough.
• Responsible for the accuracy and completeness of engineering verification testing of all system requirements.
• Responsible for ensuring Intellectual Property is protected.
• Provide technical assistance to other departments within Sig Sauer as needed.
• Interacts with customers and end users and preparing presentations for new development programs and updates on the status of these programs.
• Drive Continuous Improvement in R&D operations.
• Monitor the latest developments in the industry and evaluate their implications.
• Must follow all required ISO procedures, comply with all work exposure EH&S training requirements, and adhere to SIG SAUER, Inc. security mandates.
• Must be able to travel infrequently.
• Miscellaneous duties as assigned.
  
  

• Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering and 10 or more years engineering experience working in a R&D environment, 3 or more of which were in a managerial capacity.
• Must be able to convey ideas and information clearly, concisely, and accurately to others, both verbally and in written form.
• Must be proficient using Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
• Proficiency using Microsoft Project is preferred.
• Must be experienced using a PLM system for complete systems lines (Agile is preferred).
• Must be detail-oriented and able to understand and review complex analyses.
• Must have a fundamental understanding of manufacturing methods.
• Must have practical experience with mechanical, mechatronics and electrical assembly.
• Must be able to pro-actively define and resolve highly complex problems by collecting and analyzing data, establishing facts, drawing valid conclusions, and executing viable solutions.
• Familiarity with NATO and TOP standards as well as Mil-Specs is preferred.
• Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  
  

• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working at a computer using a keyboard and mouse performing repetitive tasks.
• Ability to open file cabinets, reach with hands and arms, bend, and twist, lift and move files.
• Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
• Must wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) where required
