Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join a project investigating the dynamics of the atmospheric jet stream, its variability, and its response to climate change, with a particular focus on the influence of localize tropical convection.
The project combines theoretical analysis, numerical modeling, and climate data analysis to address fundamental questions about the maintenance and variability of large-scale atmospheric circulation. A major focus will be on the subtropical jet, a key component of the global circulation that dominates the upper troposphere during winter and is strongly influenced by longitudinally localized tropical convection. The research outcome will advance our understanding of both present-day climate variability and future climate change.
The successful candidate is expected to publish the work in leading scientific journals and present at international conferences.
Research Activities Include
- Conducting simulations with an idealized General Circulation Model (GCM)
- Analyzing output from CMIP climate model ensembles
- Investigating atmospheric variability using ERA5 reanalysis data
- Developing and testing theoretical frameworks for jet stream dynamics
The position is based in the Atmospheric Dynamics Lab led by Dr. Orli Lachmy at the Open University of Israel in Ra’anana, located near Tel Aviv. The project involves close collaboration with researchers at Tel Aviv University, the Weizmann Institute of Science, and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and includes regular joint meetings, seminars, and scientific exchanges.
Position details
- Initial appointment: 1 year
- Extension possible for an additional 2–3 years, subject to satisfactory progress and funding availability
- The position starts on October 2026
Applicants should have:
- A PhD in atmospheric science, climate science, geophysical fluid dynamics, or a closely related field
- A strong background in atmospheric dynamics and climate variability
- Experience in numerical modeling and/or climate data analysis
- Strong quantitative and programming skills
- Excellent communication skills in English
