Nostromo Energy is a cleantech pioneer delivering grid-scale Thermal Energy Storage (TES) solutions for data centers and large commercial facilities. Our proprietary IceBrick™ technology stores cooling energy in encapsulated Phase Change Material (PCM) modules charged by a Heat Transfer Fluid (HTF) circuit during off-peak hours, then releases that capacity precisely when demand peaks — cutting energy costs, reducing carbon footprint, and decoupling cooling from grid constraints. We are scaling rapidly to meet the surging cooling demands of the AI era.

ROLE OVERVIEW

We are looking for a hands-on Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our R&D team. Your primary focus will be driving the mechanical engineering lifecycle of our TES systems — from concept and first-principles analysis through prototyping, NPI, and commissioning support for large-scale installations. As part of the role you will also contribute to nucleation and phase-change research, running experiments that feed directly into product design decisions.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Thermo-Fluid & Mechanical Design

▸   Lead mechanical and thermodynamic design of TES sub-systems: encapsulated PCM modules, HTF circuits, vessel structures, and supporting mechanical assemblies.

▸   Apply first-principles thermal and fluid analysis to optimise charging/discharging performance, system efficiency (COP), and long-term reliability.

▸   Understand heat transfer principles at the PCM-HTF interface; design for effective energy exchange without traditional heat exchanger complexity.

NPI & Product Engineering

▸   Drive New Product Introduction (NPI) processes end-to-end: DFM reviews, BOM management, supplier qualification, and first-article inspection.

▸   Own mechanical design, engineering drawings, and GD&T documentation in SolidWorks PDM throughout the product lifecycle.

▸   Collaborate with project and operations teams to support installation, commissioning, and performance validation at customer sites, with field involvement as the project requires.

▸   Define and maintain engineering standards and manufacturing specifications to enable repeatable, scalable production.

Nucleation & Phase-Change Research

▸   Design, build, and operate experimental rigs to study nucleation onset, ice crystal growth, and freezing-front behaviour within encapsulated PCM geometries.

▸   Translate experimental findings into actionable design guidelines for IceBrick™ module geometry, surface properties, and operational parameters.

▸   Work with the controls and systems engineering teams to correlate nucleation behaviour with operational set-points and charging cycles.

Cross-Functional Engineering

▸   Interface with controls, electrical, and software engineers to integrate mechanical assemblies into the complete IceBrick™ platform.

▸   Contribute to cost-reduction and reliability improvement programmes through structured design reviews and root-cause analysis.

▸   Support and mentor junior engineers as the team grows.

REQUIREMENTS

▸   B.Sc. or M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering, Thermo-Fluid Engineering, or a closely related discipline.

▸   7+ years of hands-on R&D experience in mechanical or thermo-fluid systems engineering.

▸   Deep working knowledge of thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics — applied, not just academic.

▸   Proven experience designing and executing physical experiments; comfortable with lab instrumentation (DAQ, thermocouples, pressure transducers, flow meters).

▸   Proficiency with SolidWorks for 3D modelling, drawings, and assembly management.

▸   Solid experience leading or contributing to NPI programmes for complex hardware products.

▸   Familiarity with manufacturing processes (sheet metal, machining, injection moulding, welding) and GD&T.

▸   Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to move between analysis and hands-on build/test.

▸   Professional proficiency in both Hebrew and English (both required).

NICE TO HAVE

◇   Experience with energy storage systems, HVAC, refrigeration, or chiller technology.

◇   Hands-on exposure to nucleation phenomena, phase-change materials, or ice-slurry systems.

◇   Experience with FEA or CFD simulation for mechanical stress or fluid-flow analysis.

◇   Experience with large commercial or industrial installations (data centers, district cooling, industrial process cooling).

◇   Familiarity with IEC / UL / ASHRAE standards relevant to cooling equipment.

◇   Background in cleantech or sustainability-focused engineering.
