About The Role
We're launching a new Financial Infrastructure team at Traild to build the next generation of our payments and platform capabilities from the ground up. We're looking for an Engineering Manager who leads by example — someone who is genuinely hands-on technically, while also being a strong people leader who raises the bar for everyone around them.
In this role, you will own the team's execution, culture, and technical quality. You'll partner closely with your engineers, the Product Manager, and Traild's global engineering teams to set direction and ensure the team is running well. You won't just manage — you'll be in the code, in the design reviews, and in the hard technical conversations.
This team will own a critical business channel of the company. The engineers you hire and lead will be building Traild's financial backbone — from scratch, in Go, with zero legacy code.
What You'll Do
- Lead by example — stay hands-on – You're not just a manager, you're an active technical contributor. The team sees you as a trusted technical peer as much as a leader.
- Build and grow a high-performing team – Hire, onboard, and develop senior engineers. This is a founding team — the culture and engineering standards you set now will define the team for years. You know what great looks like and how to close strong candidates.
- Own delivery and execution – Ensure the team ships high-quality work reliably. Remove blockers, manage dependencies, and keep stakeholders informed without creating unnecessary process.
- Partner across the full team – Work closely with your engineers day-to-day, partner with the Tech Lead on technical direction, align with the Product Manager on roadmap and priorities, and collaborate with Traild's global engineering teams to ensure consistency, knowledge sharing, and cross-team alignment.
- Develop engineers – Run meaningful 1:1s, give direct and actionable feedback, support career growth, and create an environment where senior engineers do their best work..
- Champion engineering excellence – Hold the team to high standards on testing, system design, and reliability. Use modern AI development tools to improve velocity and code quality, and encourage the team to do the same.
- 10+ years of software engineering experience with a strong backend focus, including at least 2 years in an engineering management or team lead role.
- Genuinely hands-on — you are still comfortable reading and contributing to code, participating in design reviews, and forming strong technical opinions. You lead by example, not just by direction.
- Proven experience leading teams building large-scale, mission-critical backend systems — ideally in fintech, payments, or high-volume transaction environments.
- Experience with Go or Python in production environments is a strong plus.
- A genuine love for people leadership — you are energised by helping engineers grow, not just by building things yourself.
- Experience hiring and building teams, particularly senior engineers in a competitive market.
- Comfortable with 0→1 environments — you've built teams or systems from scratch and know how to create structure without unnecessary overhead.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills — you work effectively across your direct team, cross-functional partners, and global engineering leadership.
- A high bar for quality — you hold the team to strong standards on testing, design, and reliability without slowing them down.
- Experience with GCP or similar cloud platforms in a production environment.
