WBAIS and Israel

Established under the auspices of the American Embassy in 1958, The Walworth Barbour American International School in Israel (WBAIS) is a MSA accredited, fully independent, co-educational Pre-K-12 international school, which offers a robust program leading to a US high school diploma.

With a present enrollment of approximately 600 students representing over 40 nationalities, AIS Israel is a diverse and vibrant community. Approximately 40% of AIS students are American, 40% from countries all over the world, and 20% Israelis.

In 2008 WBAIS moved to its current 19-acre campus that opened in 2007 and is located in the town of Even Yehuda, a residential community approximately 20 kilometers north of Tel Aviv. The purpose-built campus includes four separate divisions, a performing arts building with a 400-seat auditorium, full gym, cafeteria, library and media center, athletic fields, tennis and basketball courts, and an olympic-sized pool.

Introduction

The counseling program at AIS is a support service designed to proactively and responsively enhance the educational experience of all students. Our goal is to support the whole child by addressing the academic, social, behavioral, and emotional needs of each student. Given the right tools and support, we believe our students can succeed in all of these areas. To further that aim, we work with parents, teachers, leadership, and community resources. Due to the multicultural and transient nature of the student body, an important function of the counselor is to facilitate students’ successful transitions.

Main Responsibilities

To provide a comprehensive counseling program to the High School students of WBAIS in college counseling and all aspects of their academic, social and emotional well-being. This will be accomplished by effective collaboration and communication with all community stakeholders, including students, teachers, parents and leadership.

Position Objectives and Responsibilities

• Case Manager: Serve as the case manager for each student and monitor the student’s academic progress and social well-being. Facilitate communication between students, teachers, parents, community resources, and other important individuals that will benefit the student’s well-being and success. Consult with teachers, parents, and staff to enhance their effectiveness in helping students. Monitor students' progress for the purpose of identifying issues and taking appropriate action for increasing student success.
• Individual and Group Counseling Sessions: Meet with students individually and in groups to address issues and provide skill-building opportunities based on need. Provide short term counseling and determine the need for further counseling/therapy to be conducted outside of school.
• Intake and Admissions: Coordinate with the admissions team to enroll and place new high school students. This includes: interviewing and screening new students, meeting with new parents, administering placement testing, gathering all relevant information from past schools and records, and calling for an admissions team meeting, when necessary.
• Counseling Curriculum: Implement the High School Counseling Curriculum. Conduct Advisory meetings on topics pertaining to high school success and wellness. Potentially lead a Grade level Advisory (this is an additional stipend).
• College Counseling: Educate and support students and families as they work through the college application process.
• Child Protection: Implement the WBAIS Child Protection policy, following Israeli law procedures, and serving as a liaison to Israeli Social Services.
• Consultation with Teachers and Teacher In-Service Training: Consult with teachers to provide information and problem-solve in order to enhance the learning opportunities of students. Provide teachers and parents with training to address a variety of relevant issues such as Child Protection, Dealing with Crisis, Child Development.
• Student Services Team Member: Participate in SST meetings which include the special education teachers and administration. This provides for the placement, monitoring and program decisions for students who need additional support.
• Community Resource Liaison: Serve as a link between school and community resources, providing appropriate referrals based on student needs. Make recommendations to appropriate outside professionals and help monitor the implementation of recommendations made. Coordinate and use the services of other specialists or agencies, when appropriate.
• Orientation and Transition Programs: Coordinate and implement orientation programs for new students that may include the following activities: orientation trip, buddy program, and new student groups. Conduct/Coordinate transition programs such as Senior Seminar and IDF Preparation that facilitate smooth transitions as students move from WBAIS to university and or military. Supportive structures and learning opportunities in respect to the military will be made available if needed. Standardized Testing Program: Support the standardized testing program at the high school level which includes PSAT, SAT, and AP.
• Scheduling of Students: Provide academic counseling for each student, and assist them in the schedule-building process.
• Parenting Programs: Coordinate/Implement parenting programs/meetings on topics pertaining to parenting teenagers, dealing with stress, etc.
• Emergency Response: Serve as a member of the Emergency Response Team and help formulate the school’s action plans in response to these crisis events. Acts as crisis intervention counselor when necessary.
• Consultation with Administration and Other Stakeholders: Provide proactive leadership that engages all stakeholders in the delivery of programs and services to help students achieve school success.
• Data Manager: Maintain relevant student data and files. Monitor student progress toward graduation including updated transcripts and credit sheets. Maintain testing data (SATs, AP). Member of Counseling Department Team: serves as member of the counseling department and collaborates with K-12 counselors.
• Professional Development: Pursue continuous professional growth through activities such as attending conferences and workshops, joining relevant associations, reading professional journals.
• Perform other duties as assigned: In accordance with the Official Teachers Agreement, negotiated periodically by the WBAIS Board and the Teachers Va’ad, and the AIS Policies and Procedures for Teachers (K-12), published annually in the Faculty Handbook. Counselors are required to work ten additional days, normally five before teachers return in August and five after teachers leave in June.

MA Degree in School Counseling or equivalent

3 years experience as High School Counselor
