About the Project
A time-boxed discovery project to map three environments into a single, owned, exportable asset register, which serves as the foundation for our security program. The project involves one senior infrastructure-security generalist covering all three workstreams, ensuring that inventories cross-check each other, and identifying any discrepancies as findings.
The project requires reading, documenting, and recommending actions without making destructive changes unless there is written owner sign-off.
Required skills:
Hands-on experience with VMware vSphere (ESXi + vCenter).
Virtualization and infrastructure engineering skills.
Network engineering with vSphere networking and NSX.
Familiarity with SAN/vSAN and AD/identity integration.
DNS and Cloudflare administration.
Attack-surface and EASM mindset, including handling dangling DNS and exposed interfaces.
Stakeholder-interview facilitation and data classification skills.
Ability to create clear diagrams and structured documentation.
Scope of work:
Conduct a full inventory of the self-hosted estate, including vCenter hierarchy, ESXi hosts, VMs, virtual networking, storage, identity/access, and ownership.
Deliver exportable asset inventory, topology diagrams, exposed-management-interface list, stale VM/snapshot list, version/EOL report, ownership map, and gaps log.
Interview various teams to capture app details, cross-check against technical discovery, and standardize into one schema.
Deliver structured app inventory, owner-per-app map, criticality/data-classification tagging, shadow-IT findings, and interview coverage log.
Review Cloudflare DNS zones and records, map each to a live service and owner, flag dangling records, and recommend actions per record.
Deliver full DNS inventory with disposition, subdomain-takeover risk list, newly-discovered app list, and reviewed deletion plan for approval.
