As a Systems Engineer, you’ll design, integrate, and optimize complex systems that drive the semiconductor industry forward. System Engineer - Optical Wafer Inspection Tool
We're hiring a System Engineer to take full ownership of a precision opto - mechatronic subsystem on an optical wafer inspection tool : from concept through design, integration, and release.
The role sits at the intersection of real-time control, optical sensing, and cross-discipline systems engineering, and suits someone who can drive a subsystem end to end and coordinate optics, mechanics, electronics, and software contributors. MSc minimum in a relevant engineering or physics field.
About the role
Our optical wafer inspection tool is an imaging-based semiconductor process-control and inspection platform. We are looking for a System Engineer to take full ownership of a core precision subsystem : driving it through the complete development cycle and acting as the technical center of gravity across the optical, mechanical, electronic, and software disciplines that contribute to it.
What you will be doing?
Own a precision subsystem end to end: concept, architecture, design, integration, verification, and release.
Translate tool-level specifications into subsystem requirements and flow them down across disciplines.
Develop and validate the sensing and measurement chain, including the associated signal- and image-processing algorithms.
Build the subsystem error budget and design calibration routines that hold performance across temperature, sample variation, and drift.
Coordinate optical, mechanical, electronic, and software contributors, resolving interface and trade-off conflicts.
Define characterization methods, test plans, and acceptance criteria, and drive structured root-cause analysis of multi-domain failures on real hardware.
Education
MSc in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Optical/Photonics Engineering, Physics, Control Systems, or Systems Engineering - Must
Core technical expertise
Real-time closed-loop control: designing and tuning feedback loops, stability and settling-time analysis, disturbance rejection, and the accuracy-versus-throughput trade-off.
Precision opto-mechatronic subsystems: hands-on experience integrating sensing, actuation, and control into a working subsystem with tight positioning and timing requirements.
Optical sensing and measurement: experience deriving real-time measurements from imaging or optical sensors, and understanding how the imaging chain constrains achievable performance.
Signal and image-processing algorithms: metric extraction, filtering, peak-finding, and numerical robustness across varying sample types and low-signal conditions; image-processing proficiency.
Statistical analysis of performance data: characterizing accuracy, repeatability, and drift, and drawing sound conclusions from measured results.
Calibration and error budgeting: building a subsystem error budget and designing calibration routines
Systems engineering competencies
Requirements ownership: translating tool-level specs (accuracy, repeatability, dynamic range, throughput) into subsystem requirements and flowing them down to optics, mechanics, electronics.
SW requirements specification: writing software SRS documents that translate subsystem needs into clear, testable software requirements.
Cross-discipline integration: coordinating optical, mechanical, electronic, and software contributors and resolving interface and trade-off conflicts between them.
Verification & validation: defining characterization methods, test plans, and acceptance criteria; proving performance with data.
Structured root-cause discipline: debugging intermittent, multi-domain failures on real hardware.
Domain experience
Semiconductor process-control, metrology, or inspection equipment strongly preferred; precision optical instrumentation, microscopy, or medical imaging as adjacent backgrounds.
Experience with sub-micron / nanometer-scale positioning and measurement.
Familiarity with production-tool constraints throughput, reliability, serviceability, manufacturability , not just lab prototypes.
Software / tools
MATLAB and Python, both required for modeling, control design, and data analysis.
Embedded/real-time software exposure (C/C++), enough to specify and validate firmware even if they don't write all of it.
Familiarity with source version control tools such as Git.
Ownership and soft skills
Demonstrated end-to-end ownership of a subsystem through a full cycle (concept- design - integration - release).
Works autonomously and drives cross-team decisions without formal authority.
Clear technical communication with specialists and program-level stakeholders alike.
Great communication, responsiveness to colleagues, and a collaborative working style.
