Director, R&D – Biochemistry / Bioengineering

We are supporting an innovative, venture-backed biotechnology company in Israel that is developing a new platform for advanced protein analysis.

The business brings together biochemistry, molecular biology, microfluidics, optical detection and semiconductor-based sensing, and is now looking for a senior R&D scientist to take ownership of key biological and assay-development activities.

This is a highly multidisciplinary position for someone who enjoys working at the interface between wet-lab science and physical technology development.

The role

The successful candidate will lead the development and optimisation of the biological workflows required for the platform, working closely with scientists and engineers across multiple disciplines.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Developing and optimising protein sample-preparation and biochemical workflows
• Designing robust assays and experimental protocols for protein and biomolecular analysis
• Developing approaches for sample purification, characterisation and labelling
• Defining sample requirements and experimental conditions for different biological applications
• Supporting the integration of biological workflows with microfluidic, optical and sensor-based technologies
• Designing and interpreting experiments involving fluorescence-based detection
• Troubleshooting complex biochemical and platform-development challenges
• Helping translate early-stage scientific concepts into reproducible product workflows
• Working cross-functionally with engineering, device, product and external development partners
• Supporting the progression of the technology from R&D toward a commercial product

Background we are looking for

Candidates should ideally have:

• PhD in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Bioengineering or a closely related discipline
• Significant hands-on experience developing and optimising biochemical assays
• Strong understanding of proteins, protein chemistry and biological sample preparation
• Experience with purification, separation and characterisation techniques
• Experience developing commercial life-science, diagnostic, consumable or medical-device products
• A strong wet-lab background and the ability to remain scientifically hands-on
• Experience working in multidisciplinary environments alongside engineering or device teams
• Previous scientific leadership, project leadership or team-management experience

Rather than inheriting an established product, you would help determine how the biology, assay chemistry and physical technology ultimately come together into a scalable life-science product.

The company is based in Central Israel, and the nature of the role requires regular access to the laboratory.
