Back End Developer

Varolio turns traditional businesses into AI-native organizations. Our platform transforms messy operational data into a live model that drives fully automated AI delivery, from uncovering hidden bottlenecks to building and deploying tailored solutions.

We’re looking for a Backend Engineer with strong AI experience to take ownership of critical parts of our ontology engine, agent harnesses, and data infrastructure.

You’ll transform complex, imperfect information from multiple systems into a reliable model that lets our solutions understand the customer’s business and act on it.

**What you’ll own**

• Data & Ontology: Design and evolve data models and ontologies that represent real operational processes.
• Agent systems: Build agent harnesses, multi-agent orchestration, tool execution, and context management.
• Data infrastructure: Build storage, indexing, retrieval, APIs, and durable asynchronous workflows.
• Quality & evaluation: Build evaluation harnesses and benchmarks; own regression testing, typed outputs, validation, and provenance.
• Production performance: Own reliability, observability, latency, and cost optimization.

**What you bring**

• 5+ years building production backend systems, with strong architecture and system-design skills.
• Strong data modelling, with experience in different types of databases and search infrastructure, such as Elasticsearch and Postgres.
• Experience with distributed and asynchronous systems: queues, retries, idempotency, and backfills, such as Temporal.
• Hands-on experience building LLM agents, including agent harnesses, tool calling, and context engineering.
• Experience working with large, incomplete, or conflicting datasets from multiple sources.
• Experience evaluating AI systems, debugging failures, and improving accuracy and reliability.
• Rigour and curiosity: you care about the business logic behind the data, not only moving records from A to B.

You’ll work directly with the founding team and help shape the architecture and engineering practices behind the product.

We are a small, ambitious team building from the ground up. There is no playbook here. You’ll have both the space and the responsibility to shape the foundations of a product that turns complex customer reality into reliable AI systems.
