The Marcoast Ecosystems Integration Lab at the Technion, headed by Prof. Michelle Portman, has a fully-funded position in a project that seeks to research impediments to the re-use of treated waste water (i.e., secondary treatment) for agricultural, home and commercial use in arid, desert areas.

The project is funded by the Middle Eastern Regional Cooperation program and covers water issues (including innovative engineering technologies) focused on improving and promoting irrigation water availability throughout the Mideast region, in particular developing countries where access to desalination is limited; the approach focuses on the new technology of managed aquifer recharge. The project involves close collaboration with researchers of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The fellow will apply empirical social-science and policy research methods in rural areas of Jordan and Israel focusing on managed aquifers for agriculture which will be the basis for the development of environmental and water reuse policy. A limited understanding of managed aquifer research is required, however, close interaction with water engineers is necessary. 

Candidates are expected to devote full-time to the fellowship (for 9-months to one year) with the possibility of extension.  The fellow must also be a full and active member of the MarCoast lab during their fellowship. The base stipend will be 9000 NIS/month but with the possibility of an increasing rate according to accomplishments. In addition, all related expenses (any and all travel) related to conducting the research and including any publishing, editing or revision costs.  The fellow will have a modest travel budget for collecting data and presenting research outputs at international venues. 

The successful candidate will be hired based on the following criteria: A passion for resource conservation and environmental protection policy; Experience using GIS and/or R/STATA/SPSS a plus; Proven experience with academic presentations, writing academic papers and/or professional reports; Full proficiency in English plus some knowledge of reading and writing in Hebrew & Arabic.
