The Role:As a Backend Team Lead, you will provide both technical leadership and people leadership for a team of backend engineers responsible for delivering scalable, resilient services that power DAZN's real-time social interaction experiences. You'll define the technical vision, guide architectural decisions, and champion engineering best practices while supporting your team's growth and development. Working closely with Product, Architecture, and Engineering teams, you'll ensure high-quality software is delivered efficiently, balancing technical excellence with business priorities. This is a hands-on leadership role, combining strategic thinking with technical expertise to build innovative solutions that serve millions of sports fans worldwide.

What You'll Be Doing:

• Defining and driving the technical vision, architecture, and roadmap for the backend platform
• Leading the design and development of scalable microservices supporting real-time social interaction features
• Establishing engineering standards, coding best practices, and quality assurance processes
• Overseeing automated testing, end-to-end testing, performance testing, and platform reliability
• Leading, mentoring, and developing a team of backend engineers through coaching, feedback, and career development
• Collaborating with Product, Architecture, and cross-functional engineering teams to align technical delivery with business objectives
• Supporting recruitment activities, including technical interviews and hiring decisions
• Evaluating new technologies and continuously improving engineering processes, infrastructure, and development workflows
  
  

What You'll Bring:

• Previous experience in software engineering, including experience building cloud-native backend platforms
• Previous experience leading or managing engineering teams, with a passion for coaching and developing others
• Strong expertise in Python and modern backend development practices
• Extensive experience designing microservices, event-driven architectures, REST APIs, and distributed systems
• Hands-on experience with AWS, serverless technologies, infrastructure as code (Terraform), SQL/NoSQL databases, and modern software engineering practices

It's even better if you have:

• Experience integrating AI tools into software development workflows
• Experience working with CI/CD pipelines, including GitHub Actions or Jenkins
• Knowledge of networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP and HTTP
• Experience working within Agile delivery environments using Jira and Confluence
• Experience building consumer-facing, high-traffic products within sports, media, or streaming organisations
