Applied AI Engineer

We’re looking for a strong software engineer who has already spent meaningful time building software directly with customers - not just for them.

This is not a classic Backend role, and it’s not an AI research role.

You’ll work directly with mid-market companies, get deep into how their operations actually work, identify where AI can create real leverage, and then build and deploy the systems that make it happen.

That means sitting with users, understanding messy workflows, connecting to legacy systems and APIs, making architectural decisions, writing production code, debugging inside real customer environments, and owning the deployment until it actually works.

You should apply only if you have both:

Serious software engineering depth

5+ years as a Software / Backend / Fullstack / Platform Engineer, building and debugging production systems.

Meaningful customer-facing engineering experience

You’ve personally worked directly with external customers as part of delivering technical solutions -ideally as an FDE, Forward Deployed Software Engineer, Applied AI Engineer, Customer Engineer, Solutions Engineer with significant coding responsibility, or in a similar hands-on role.

What we’re looking for

• You’ve owned technical customer deployments from discovery and scoping through implementation and production.
• You’re comfortable sitting with a customer, understanding an imperfect business process, and turning it into a technical system.
• You still write production-grade code yourself.
• You’ve integrated with third-party APIs, databases, ERP/CRM systems, legacy software, or other systems you didn’t control.
• You can operate independently when requirements are incomplete and the environment is messy.
• You’re comfortable moving between users, business stakeholders, architecture, code, debugging, and deployment.
• You have hands-on experience building production systems with LLMs, agents, tool calling, evals, or modern AI application stacks.
• You care much more about measurable production impact than AI demos or buzzwords.

This is probably not the right role if

• Most of your experience is internal product engineering with little direct customer interaction.
• Your customer-facing experience was primarily demos, pre-sales, implementation management, or solution design without substantial coding.
• Your AI experience is mostly experimentation, prompting, or prototypes that never reached production.
• You prefer receiving clear requirements over discovering the problem yourself.
• You want to specialize exclusively in models, data science, frontend, or backend.

Strong advantage

• Current or former FDE / FDSE / Applied AI Engineer
• Experience deploying AI into mid-market or enterprise organizations
• Early-stage startup or ex-founder experience
• Experience automating operational workflows across messy enterprise systems

You’ll spend significant time directly with customers, including on-site work when needed.
