Communications Officer

Salary: EUR 52,000 - 54,000 gross/year

BirdLife ECA is one of the six regional Secretariats that compose BirdLife International, the global authority on the status of bird species. Based in Brussels, it supports the European and Central Asian Partnership and is present in 47 countries including all EU Member States.

With more than 4.100 staff in Europe, 2 million members and tens of thousands of skilled

volunteers, BirdLife Europe and Central Asia, together with its national Partners, owns or manages more than 6,000 nature sites totalling 320 000 hectares.

We are looking for a Communications Officer to join our Bird Life Europe and Central Asia team in Brussels, Belgium. In this role you will contribute to BirdLife’s work by playing an active role across the full range of BirdLife Europe’s communications work: from press and campaigns to social media, editorial content, and supporting our national BirdLife Partners. You will work closely with the Head of Communications and collaborate across the policy and conservation teams to ensure our messages land with the audiences that matter: journalists, EU decision-makers, civil society, and the public. This is a hands-on, varied role for someone who enjoys the craft of communications and cares genuinely about protecting nature across Europe and Central Asia.

How You Will Do This

• Develop and execute communications plans for campaigns, policy moments, and conservation priorities, including EU legislative processes, coalition campaigns, and advocacy milestones.
• Create and manage engaging content across multiple channels, including media, web, newsletters, social media, photography, video, infographics, and other multimedia assets to maximise the impact of BirdLife's communications.
• Manage media relations, social media, and digital communications to increase visibility, audience engagement, and campaign impact.
• Lead communications on assigned policy and conservation topics which may include agricultural policy and nature restoration, working closely with the relevant policy and science colleagues to translate complex issues into clear, accessible messaging.
• Support BirdLife’s national Partner organisations in developing communications materials, sharing tools and resources, and coordinating network-wide messaging around shared campaigns and policy and conservation moments.
• Coordinate communications for events, campaign launches, and advocacy moments, while driving audience engagement through content planning, digital strategy, analytics, and innovative outreach.
• Attend relevant meetings, workshops, and events, including Partner gatherings across Europe, to represent BirdLife’s communications function and contribute to the broader network.
• Collaborate with policy, conservation, and global communications teams to deliver accurate, strategically aligned, and consistent communications, while applying communications best practices and innovative approaches to maximise impact.
  
  

• University degree in journalism, communications or political science
• Professional experience in communications. Experience in NGOs, civil society, advocacy, journalism, public affairs, or EU policy environments strongly preferred.
• C2-level proficiency in English with outstanding writing and editing skills across a range of formats and audiences; knowledge of other European languages is an asset.
• Ability to translate complex scientific and policy issues into clear, engaging, and impactful communications, with a strong instinct for storytelling and crafting compelling messages for diverse audiences.
• Strong digital communications skills, including proficiency in Microsoft 365, Canva, and multimedia content creation tools; experience with CMS, social media platforms, and Adobe Creative Suite is an advantage.
