Hearing Interpreter (ASL Interpreter)
QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to interpret/transliterate at a normal conversational rate when DHH students or parents are present, utilizing American Sign Language, Pidgin Sign English, and/or Signed Exact English.
- Ability to use total communication with each child as required.
- General knowledge of the educational process, deafness, the growth and development of children, children’s language, and the culture of the deaf.
- Ability to work as part of an educational team to help provide the DHH student with appropriate opportunities to benefit from their education.
- Ability to remain flexible and adapt to work site location, environment, and/or schedule changes.
- Certification or documentation of at least one of the following: (1) state-level screening QA Level, (2) EIPA certification, (3) National Certification.
- Must be registered with the Office of Deaf and Hard of Hearing of the MS Department of Rehabilitation Services.
Building Principal, Assistant Principal, and Director of Special Education.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Such duties and responsibilities as may be assigned, including but not limited to:
- Provide expressive and voice interpreting for DHH students in all areas of the educational environment.
- Serves as liaison between DHH students, classmates, teachers, and other staff by:
- Encouraging DHH students to work directly with the classroom teacher
- With the DHH teacher, familiarize the classroom teacher with the exact role of the interpreter in the classroom.
- Promoting the participation of DHH students in all classroom activities by following:
- Assisting the classmates in understanding the role of the interpreter.
- Helping peers understand the social and communication needs of the DHH students.
- Supporting the teaching in developing a level of comfort with the interaction styles and needs of DHH students.
- Participate in educational team meetings, including developing and reviewing progress on the IEP, providing insight on the success of communication strategies currently being used by students and staff.
- Interpret for DHH students during field trips, counseling sessions, and meetings with administration or other building staff.
- Work cooperatively with other interpreters, staff, and administration to provide the most appropriate services possible throughout the school day.
- Supports and assists other staff by modeling positive interpersonal skills; participates as a team member for planning and reviewing daily activities, attending in-services, and providing information.
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal, Superintendent, and other central office staff. The Superintendent designates administrators.

CONDITIONS
Substantial requirement to listen closely and concentrate on interpreting; confined to the workstation for prolonged periods; occasionally required to deal with distraught students; may be required to sit, kneel, or stand for prolonged periods; may be required to work outdoors; may travel to other schools in the district to facilitate communication for DHH students based on the need in the district.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
180 days annually, with salary per the Administrative Salary Schedule as approved by the Harrison County School District.
EVALUATION:
The hearing Interpreter's performance will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions in the School Board Policies and Procedures.

Interpreter for the Hearing Impaired
QUALIFICATIONS
- In accordance with Mississippi Code S37-9-17, all personnel employed by the public-school system shall be required to pass a criminal background check and a current child abuse registry check.
- A satisfactory employment record.
- Mississippi Certified Licensure Required
- Positive attitude towards working with students.
- Pleasing personality and appearance, professional demeanor.
JOB GOAL
To assist the teacher(s) and student(s) in maintaining appropriate classroom activities and environment in order that the student(s) may learn effectively.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Such duties and responsibilities as may be assigned, including but not limited to:
- Reinforce skills that have been previously introduced by the teacher.
- Provide individual instruction.
- Assists student(s) in specific skills development.
- Collaborate with the teacher(s).
- Review with students(s) who have been absent and missed classwork.
- Accompany student(s) to music, P.E., library, recess, lunch, field trips.
- Assist substitute teachers.
- Promote parent/community involvement in the instructional process.
- Operate audio-visual aids and/or assistive technology as required.
- Abide by confidentiality regulations.
- Clear all parent communication through the classroom teacher(s).
- Assist in record keeping.
- Other duties as assigned by administrator.
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Superintendent of Education, Assistant Superintendent of Education, and Building Principal.
