Senior NPI Engineer – Electric Motors
About the Role
We are looking for an experienced and hands-on NPI Engineer to lead the transition of electric motor products from R&D development and prototype builds into stable, repeatable mass production.
This role will take end-to-end ownership of the industrialization process - from design maturity and manufacturing readiness through pilot builds, production validation, ramp-up, and ongoing process improvement. The ideal candidate has strong experience bringing mechanical or electromechanical products into mass production at volumes of 10K units or more.
This position requires close collaboration with R&D, mechanical engineering, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, suppliers, and international partners. The NPI Engineer will serve as the key technical interface between product development and production, ensuring that new motor designs meet cost, quality, manufacturability, reliability, and delivery targets.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the transfer of new electric motor products from R&D prototypes to serial production.
- Develop and execute NPI and industrialization plans, including manufacturing-readiness reviews, pilot builds, process validation, and production ramp-up.
- Work closely with R&D teams to ensure designs are suitable for high-volume manufacturing, assembly, testing, and quality control.
- Lead DFM and DFA activities and provide structured feedback to improve product manufacturability, cost, quality, and production efficiency.
- Define manufacturing processes, assembly flows, tooling, fixtures, equipment, test requirements, and production-line specifications.
- Coordinate prototype, engineering-validation, pre-production, and pilot-production builds.
- Lead technical problem-solving during production introduction, including root-cause analysis and implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
- Work with suppliers and manufacturing partners to industrialize mechanical components and electromechanical assemblies.
- Support supplier selection, technical assessments, process reviews, and production-readiness audits.
- Lead or support PFMEA, process-flow development, control plans, work instructions, and production-quality documentation.
- Establish and monitor production KPIs, including yield, cycle time, scrap, capacity, process capability, and first-pass quality.
- Identify production risks early and drive mitigation actions to ensure successful launch and stable mass production.
- Support engineering changes after production release while minimizing disruption to quality, cost, and delivery.
- Collaborate with global engineering, operations, quality, supply-chain, customer, and supplier teams.
Requirements
- BA or MA in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
- At least 7 years of relevant experience in NPI, manufacturing engineering, industrialization, or production engineering.
- Demonstrated experience transferring mechanical or electromechanical products from development into mass production.
- Proven experience with production volumes of at least 10K units.
- Strong experience with the mass production of mechanical, metal-based, or electromechanical products and assemblies. Experience focused primarily on plastic products is not sufficient for this position.
- Practical knowledge of manufacturing processes such as machining, stamping, casting, forging, grinding, balancing, joining, winding, assembly, and end-of-line testing.
- Strong understanding of mechanical drawings, GD&T, tolerance analysis, material selection, and manufacturing-process capabilities.
- Hands-on experience with DFM, DFA, PFMEA, root-cause analysis, process validation, and production ramp-up.
- Experience defining or improving production lines, tooling, fixtures, assembly processes, and test equipment.
- Strong supplier-management and supplier-industrialization capabilities.
- Ability to analyze production data and improve yield, quality, cycle time, cost, and process capability.
- Strong project-management, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
- Ability to work independently, take ownership, and operate effectively in a fast-paced global environment.
- Willingness to travel to suppliers, manufacturing sites, and global company locations as required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with the industrialization and mass production of electric motors, automotive components, precision mechanical systems, or other complex electromechanical products.
- Familiarity with electric motor technologies such as BLDC or PMSM motors.
- Experience with motor manufacturing processes, including lamination stacks, shafts, bearings, rotor and stator assembly, winding, balancing, impregnation, magnet assembly, and end-of-line testing.
- Experience in automotive or other highly regulated, high-quality manufacturing environments.
- Knowledge of APQP, PPAP, MSA, SPC, control plans, and process-capability requirements.
- Familiarity with IATF 16949 and relevant ISO quality standards.
- Experience working with contract manufacturers and international suppliers.
- Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or structured continuous-improvement methodologies.
What We Offer
- A key role in bringing advanced electric motor technology from R&D into mass production.
- Direct ownership of technically challenging and strategically important industrialization projects.
- Close collaboration with international engineering, operations, supplier, and customer teams.
- The opportunity to influence product design, manufacturing strategy, and production capabilities.
- A dynamic, hands-on environment with significant responsibility and professional growth potential.
