R&D Lab Technician

We are seeking an Electro-Optical Lab Technician to join our hardware team developing AR glasses for the medical device industry. The role combines electro-optical assembly, functional testing and calibration, troubleshooting, and regulatory/safety certification (EMC, laser safety, FCC, SAR, 60601).

This position requires a hands-on technician with strong soldering, mechanical integration, and optical alignment skills, capable of working across component assembly, lab-based test and measurement, jig and fixture development, and cross-functional collaboration with engineering to support a regulated medical hardware product from prototype through production.

Responsibilities:

• Assemble electro-optical components, modules, and systems following engineering drawings, schematics, and assembly instructions. Perform tasks such as soldering, wiring, mechanical assembly, and component integration.
• Operate cameras, light sources including lasers, optical instruments.
• Conduct functional testing, verification, and calibration of electro-optical systems and modules using laboratory equipment and tools. Document and report test results accurately and maintain detailed records.
• Identify and troubleshoot issues, defects, or failures in electro-optical systems. Use diagnostic tools and methodologies to isolate problems, perform or recommend corrective actions.
• Lead and carry out certification tests at certified laboratories: EMC and laser safety and other safety and regulatory tests, e.g. FCC, SAR, 60601.
• Participate in jigs and anatomical models design and assembly
• Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment, tools, and instruments to ensure accuracy and reliability of measurements and testing. Follow appropriate safety procedures and protocols during equipment usage and maintenance.
• Collaborate with engineers to communicate test results, provide feedback on design improvements, and contribute to the development of standardized testing procedures. Document and maintain accurate records of assembly processes, test procedures, and equipment maintenance.
• Follow all safety protocols and regulations to maintain a safe working environment in the laboratory. Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards, quality management systems, and regulatory requirements for medical devices.
• Identify opportunities for process improvement, efficiency enhancement, and cost reduction. Propose ideas and contribute to the implementation of best practices in assembly, testing, and quality control procedures.

Experience Required:

• 5 years of experience as an electro-optical lab technician, preferably in the medical device industry or a related field.
• Associate degree or equivalent certification in Electrical, Optical or Mechanical Engineering, Electronics Technology, or a related field. BSc is a plus.
• Strong background in electronics and optics, including assembly techniques, soldering, wiring, alignment, adhesives and mechanical integration.
• Proficiency in using laboratory equipment and tools for testing, measurement, and calibration.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and assembly instructions.
• Experience in setting up and troubleshooting electro-optical systems.
• Familiarity with quality control procedures and inspection techniques.
• Experience in operating and maintaining 3D printers (FDM/SLA)
• Proficiency in SolidWorks/Fusion360 is a plus
• Proficiency in Arduino/ESP32/RPi is a plus
