BioProtect Ltd is a leading medical startup in radiation protection technology. We offer spacers protecting healthy tissue during radiation oncology treatments, based on proprietary biodegradable balloon technology. The balloons suit a wide range of clinical applications in the fields of oncology and general surgery. The company’s first product, the BioProtect Balloon Implant, protects healthy tissue in patients undergoing radiation therapy for prostate cancer. Recently, BioProtect was acquired by Olympus Corporation and now operates as part of the Olympus Group.

The opportunity:

As an R&D Engineer, you will play a key role in the development of innovative medical devices for minimally invasive surgical and radiation oncology procedures. Working as part of a multidisciplinary R&D team, you will contribute to all stages of the product development lifecycle, from concept evaluation and design verification to validation and regulatory documentation. This is an exciting opportunity to combine hands-on engineering, technical problem-solving, and cross-functional collaboration while helping bring cutting-edge technologies to patients worldwide.

In this position you will be asked to:

• Contribute to the development of innovative medical devices throughout the entire product development lifecycle.
• Design, execute, and document verification and validation activities to ensure product performance and quality.
• Develop engineering solutions, evaluate design alternatives, and support technical risk management.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, suppliers, manufacturers, and external development partners.
• Prepare technical documentation in compliance with FDA Design Controls and support regulatory submissions.
• Contribute to continuous product improvement, innovation, and intellectual property activities.

A successful candidate will have the following qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering, Materials Science, or a related Engineering discipline.
• 2-5 years of experience in medical device R&D (or an M.Sc. with relevant experience).
• Experience with medical device product development, preferably within a stage-gate development process.
• Working knowledge of FDA Design Controls is required; familiarity with ISO 14971, ISO 10993, IEC 60601, or other relevant medical device standards is an advantage.
• Experience with design verification and validation, technical documentation, and product development deliverables.
• Experience in statistics is required. Working knowledge of statistical analysis software (e.g., Minitab) is a plus.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications is required.
• Working knowledge of SolidWorks is an advantage.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make sound technical decisions.
• Ability to effectively manage multiple workstreams and prioritize tasks in a dynamic environment.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across cross-functional teams and present technical information to stakeholders.
• Experience with implantable or bioabsorbable medical devices and familiarity with medical device manufacturing processes are considered an advantage.
• A proactive, positive attitude with a commitment to delivering high-quality work in a collaborative team environment.
