Optical Design Engineer

Join a multidisciplinary engineering team developing advanced optical systems for cutting edge defense applications.

Key Responsibilities

• Full-cycle development of optical assemblies, from requirements and concept through detailed design, optimization, simulations, and sensitivity analysis
• Design of airborne and naval observation systems, imaging optics, and laser illumination solutions spanning the visible to long-wave infrared spectrum, while achieving target performance under strict SWaP-C and environmental specifications
• Perform stray light analysis, mechanical tolerancing, and iteratively optimize design based on dynamic load simulations
• Support prototyping activities, including optical assembly and calibration, to ensure successful design verification testing and validation
• Prepare technical specification documents and drawings, lead engineering design reviews, and support supplier evaluation, acceptance testing and production
• Evaluate and integrate emerging optical technologies, including flat optics, adaptive optics, and advanced image sensors and photodetectors
• Collaborate with mechanical, structural analysis, motion control, and image processing engineering teams to deliver optimized system solutions

Required Qualifications

• B.Sc. or M.Sc. in physics or electro-optical engineering
• Minimum of 5 years in optical design and simulation, with a proven track record in thermal imaging
• Experience with fixed focal length and zoom lenses, including apochromatic and athermal designs
• Proficiency in refractive, reflective, and diffractive optical system architectures
• Hands-on experience with optical metrology equipment, including interferometers, collimators, integrating spheres, and black bodies
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to lead subcontractors and thrive in a multidisciplinary environment
• Familiarity with optical manufacturing technologies, materials, and specialized coatings – Advantage
• Prior experience in the defense industry, specifically with long-range observation payloads – Advantage
• Familiarity with AI-assisted design tools and methodologies – Advantage
