POSITION SUMMARY

In the position of Safety Officer, you will play a critical role in ensuring compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations. You will be responsible for monitoring and supervising workplace operations to safeguard the wellbeing of all employees and to foster a culture of safety throughout the organization. This position is responsible for ensuring compliance with applicable safety, health and environmental legislation, SANS codes, bylaws and best practices. This incumbent will apply relevant work experience to create policies that eliminate workplace hazards. Additionally, this role includes documentation of workplace incidents and thorough investigation of the circumstances surrounding any occupational illnesses or injuries.

Key Responsibilities:

Implementing and Maintaining Safety, Health and Environmental Programmes:

• Responsible for implementing and maintaining a comprehensive Safety management system for the organization. This includes maintaining and enforcing SHE policies, procedures, and guidelines.

Risk Assessments and Hazard Identification:

• Conduct regular risk assessments to identify potential hazards in the workplace and develop strategies to mitigate those risks.

Compliance with Legislation:

• Ensure that the organization complies with all applicable Safety, Health and Environmental Legislation and Municipal bylaws.
• Maintain working relations with External Stakeholders, i.e. Dept of Labour, Environmental Health Inspectors, etc.

SHE Performance:

• Maintain and provide analysis on SHE Key Performance Indicators (KPI)
• Conduct applicable SHE inspections in all departments
• Follow up on corrective actions and provide potential solutions through engagements with Operations team

Employee Education, Training and Coaching:

• Provide safety training and education to employees, promoting a Safety, Health and Environmental - conscious culture within the organization.
• Coaching the Safety, Health and Environmental role players in Operations
• SHE Representatives, Fire Team Members, First aiders

Incident Investigation and Reporting:

• Investigate workplace incidents and accidents, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

Monitoring and Auditing:

• Monitor workplace Safety, Health and Environmental practices and conduct regular audits to ensure that safety procedures are being followed.

Working with Line Management:

• Work closely with line management to implement safety initiatives and ensure compliance in their respective work areas.

Promoting a Safety, Health and Environmental Culture:

• Play a key role in promoting a positive safety culture within the organization, encouraging employees to prioritize safety.

Requirements:

• A Diploma or degree in Safety, Health and Environmental or a related field
• Proficient knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations, National Environmental Management Act and applicable Environmental Legislation and SANS Codes
• ISO 45001/ISO 14001 implementation
• Technical knowledge on machinery and auxiliary equipment in a MHI environment
• Minimum of 3-5 years SHE and or technical operational experience (FMCG experience preferred)
• Ability to explain technical concepts in simple terms
• Proficiency in computer programs such as MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Demonstrated ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with changing priorities and tight deadlines.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills to effectively interact with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
• Acute attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.
• Strong organizational and time management skills.
