Senior Software Engineer (Edge / Systems / Reliability)

GreenOnyx, an innovative Ag-Tech / Food-Tech startup based in Tel Aviv, is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to take ownership of the on-prem / edge execution layer at the heart of our autonomous farming platform.

This role focuses on mission-critical, long-running systems operating on local servers inside the farm — close to machines, not in the cloud.

You will build software that must keep running under real-world conditions: network outages, hardware instability, partial failures, and asynchronous environments.

This is a systems + reliability role with strong emphasis on pragmatic stabilization of existing systems — not greenfield rewrite, not pure backend APIs, and not frontend.

Location: Tel Aviv

Key Responsibilities:

• Design, build, and maintain long-running Python services on Linux (daemons / workers / controllers)

• Own system reliability: failure handling, retries, recovery flows, idempotency, and state reconciliation

• Stabilize and evolve existing systems with a pragmatic, production-first mindset (not rewrite-driven)

• Integrate with machines, PLCs, and industrial devices via APIs and low-level communication protocols

• Implement and maintain device ↔ edge ↔ cloud communication (commands, acknowledgements, sync flows)

• Work with network-constrained environments (offline-first / intermittent connectivity)

• Handle inter-process and inter-system communication (TCP, sockets, message queues, serial, etc.)

• Build observability into the system (logs, metrics, health, diagnostics) for production troubleshooting

• Collaborate with hardware, biology, and operations teams to ensure robust real-world behavior

Requirements:

• 5+ years of experience in backend / systems software engineering

• Strong hands-on experience with Python in production systems (services, not scripts/notebooks)

• Proven experience building or maintaining long-running services on Linux

• Strong systems mindset: reliability, fault tolerance, and recovery over “feature delivery”

• Experience handling failures in real-world environments (crashes, restarts, network issues)

• Experience integrating with external systems, devices, or non-trivial environments

• Ability to reason deeply about state, concurrency, and edge cases

• Experience owning systems in production — including debugging and stabilizing them

Nice-to-have

• Experience with IoT / edge / embedded Linux (user-space level)

• Experience integrating with industrial systems / PLCs (e.g., OPC-UA, Modbus)

• Experience with device communication protocols (TCP, serial, sockets, etc.)

• Experience in offline-first architectures / local persistence / sync mechanisms

• Background in robotics / industrial automation / control systems integration
