Principal AI Engineer

About the role

We’re looking for a Principal Engineer to take ownership of some of the most complex technical challenges across Monto’s platform. This is a deeply hands-on individual contributor role for someone who loves solving hard engineering problems, shaping architecture, and setting a high technical bar across the company.

You’ll work on the core systems that power integrations, workflow orchestration, data reliability, automation, and product scalability. You will partner closely with engineering leadership and product, and serve as a key technical anchor for the company as we grow.

What you’ll do

Lead architecture and implementation of critical platform components

Design scalable systems for complex integrations, workflow automation, and data processing

Tackle hard technical problems around reliability, performance, and maintainability

Set engineering standards and influence technical direction across teams

Partner with engineers to unblock difficult design and implementation challenges

Improve system observability, resilience, and developer efficiency

Contribute directly to code in high-leverage parts of the platform

Help evaluate tradeoffs and make long-term technical decisions aligned with company goals

What we’re looking for

8+ years of software engineering experience with deep backend and architecture expertise

Strong track record of designing and building large-scale production systems

Ability to operate as a senior technical leader without formal people management

Excellent problem-solving skills and strong technical judgment

Experience working on complex integration-heavy or workflow-heavy products

High standards for code quality, design, and operational excellence

Strong communication skills and ability to influence across teams

Nice to have

Experience in fintech, invoicing, payments infrastructure, or enterprise software

Experience working with external systems, APIs, and data synchronization challenges

Familiarity with AI systems, intelligent automation, or agent-based workflows

• Background in startup environments with fast product iteration and evolving architecture
