Scala is developing an advanced computational platform for protein design to meet the rising demand for protein-based products in various markets, from therapeutics and enzymes for sustainable chemistry to FoodTech and others. We streamline the complex process of transforming natural proteins into commercial products by optimizing properties like potency, cost-of-goods, and resistance to industrial conditions. The basis for Scala’s solution was developed at the Weizmann Institute of Science. The technology showed success in solving highly challenging protein-engineering problems across diverse applications, including vaccines, drug development, biofuel production, and waste decomposition. Scala was founded in 2022 with investments from top tier VCs.

Role Description

We are looking for a Tech Lead to join our tight-knit team of software engineers, AI researchers and protein designers; a team player who is excited to work in a small startup atmosphere and take part in all aspects of running a biotech company that turns scientific breakthroughs into valuable products with a positive impact on humankind.

Responsibilities

As part of our team you will play a key role in shaping and leading the development

of our computational platform:

• Lead the design and architecture of core systems and infrastructure for scalable protein design workflows.
• Drive technical direction and best practices across the engineering team.
• Build the infrastructure for our future engineering growth.
• Effectively leverage AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude Code) and integrate them into engineering workflows and best practices.
• Own and evolve our internal computational pipelines: automation, optimization, and reliability.
• Design and manage cloud infrastructure as code
• Mentor engineers and contribute to a high standard of engineering excellence

Qualifications

Required

• BSc in computer science or bioinformatics.
• 5+ years of experience in Python programming.
• Strong system design and architectural thinking.
• Proven ability to lead or drive major technical initiatives.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills; a team player who can lead cross-functional efforts.
• Fast learner with the ability to master new domains quickly.
• Strong ownership mindset, can-do attitude, and ability to execute end-to-end.

Preferred

• Experience building and scaling cloud-based pipelines.
• Experience applying machine learning to biological datasets.
• Experience with Rosetta, protein structure prediction, or protein design tools.
• Enthusiasm for biology, proteins, and working closely with scientists.
• Experience in biotech companies.
