VP R&D – FINTECH Startup

One of the companies we represent – a bootstrap fintech startup – is looking to hire a VP R&D to play a key role in shaping the company’s technology and growth.

The company is developing an investment management platform, taking a fundamentally different approach from what currently exists in the market. It already has paying customers and is preparing for its next phase of expansion.

This is a unique opportunity to join at a critical stage, where your leadership will have a direct and visible impact on the product and the company’s success. The role includes being part of the executive leadership team and partnering in leading the product both technically and strategically.

Role Overview

We are looking for a proactive, hands-on VP R&D to lead a small development team.

The role includes full ownership of the technology strategy, execution, and team building. You will work closely with the CEO and other stakeholders to translate the business vision into a secure and scalable fintech product.

This is a opportunity to influence the technological foundations and engineering culture from the company’s early stages.

Responsibilities

• Lead and grow the development team while ensuring delivery of a high-quality software product.
• Define the technological direction and drive key architectural decisions.
• Design and implement backend systems and lead the migration of an existing legacy system to a new architecture.
• Integrate AI Assistant tools as part of the development process.
• Establish development best practices, including code quality, testing, and deployment processes.
• Mentor and professionally develop team members while building a strong, high-performing engineering culture.
• Proactively identify scalability, reliability, and performance challenges and lead their resolution.

Requirements

• Proven experience leading and building software development teams (advantage in early-stage startups).
• Strong knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS / GCP) and infrastructure as code (Terraform, CloudFormation).
• Experience with real-time data processing (Kafka, Pub/Sub) and both SQL and NoSQL databases.
• Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines and implementing DevOps best practices.
• Experience working in AI-driven development environments, including Vibe Coding methodologies and AI-assisted coding tools as part of the SDLC.
• Strong product mindset with the ability to translate business needs into scalable solutions.
• Hands-on experience with Node.js, .NET, and microservices architecture - Nice to have
• Experience in fintech - Nice to have
