Backend Team Lead

A fast-growing AI technology company operating in high-impact, mission-critical environments is looking for an exceptional Team Leader to lead a engineering team.

The company is developing advanced real-time AI systems deployed in complex production environments across public safety, critical infrastructure, and enterprise domains. Their work combines cutting-edge research, robust engineering practices, and a strong commitment to privacy and responsible innovation.

This is a hands-on leadership role (at least 50% coding) with a strong backend focus.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a hands-on technical leader, dedicating at least 50% of the time to backend development.
• Lead the architecture, design, and implementation of scalable, high-availability backend services and APIs.
• Ensure system stability, performance, and resilience in production environments.
• Manage and mentor a cross-functional team (Backend, Frontend, DevOps), promoting ownership, accountability, and engineering excellence.
• Own and evolve CI/CD pipelines, internal DevOps tooling, and production infrastructure.
• Work closely with Product and Research/AI teams to define the technical roadmap and deliver complex features.
• Diagnose and resolve performance, latency, scalability, and reliability challenges in distributed systems.
• Serve as a technical escalation point, occasionally supporting customer-facing technical discussions.
• Coordinate and lead collaboration with offshore teams to ensure quality and timely delivery.

Requirements

• 7+ years of software development experience (backend or full-stack).
• 2+ years of experience in a technical leadership or team lead role.
• 4+ years of hands-on backend development experience in Python.
• Proven experience designing and maintaining RESTful and event-driven architectures.
• Strong experience with distributed systems, including tools such as Kafka, Redis, and MongoDB.
• Experience working with containerized environments and Kubernetes-based production platforms.
