VP R&D Manager – AI / Computer Vision | Early-Stage Industrial Automation Startup

We are looking for a hands-on VP R&D Manager to join a young, early-stage startup developing advanced AI-based computer vision software for automation and robotics.

The company’s customers are global industrial leaders across the medical devices, defense and space, automotive, and electronics sectors.

This is a rare opportunity to join at an early stage and play a key role in building both the product and the R&D organization from the ground up. The company currently has a small, talented team of 5 engineers (software and algorithms) that is expected to grow to around 10 within the next year.

Because the team is still small, this role requires a very hands-on leader who will stay close to the code, conduct code reviews and guide technical design and implementation personally — while progressively scaling the team and infrastructure.

The position reports directly to the CEO and is part of the company’s management team.

Responsibilities

• Lead and grow the R&D team — from 5 engineers today to around 10 within the next year.
• Stay close to the code: conduct reviews, provide architectural guidance, and ensure technical excellence.
• Define and execute the company’s R&D and product strategy in alignment with business goals.
• Drive end-to-end development of products and features, from concept to deployment.
• Collaborate closely with the CTO, product, sales, and manufacturing teams.
• Evaluate and integrate emerging technologies to maintain a competitive edge.

Requirements

• Proven experience in building and managing small, high-performing R&D teams.
• Deep understanding of software architecture, computer vision, AI, and algorithms.
• Ability and motivation to remain hands-on in an early-stage startup environment.
• Background in developing software for industrial sectors (medical, defense, automotive, or electronics).
• Startup mindset — proactive, adaptable, and comfortable working in dynamic conditions.
• B.Sc. or M.Sc. in Computer Science, Mathematics, or Engineering.
• 7+ years of progressive R&D and leadership experience.
