WBAIS and Israel
Established under the auspices of the American Embassy in 1958, The Walworth Barbour American International School in Israel (WBAIS) is a MSA accredited, fully independent, co-educational day and boarding EY-12 international school, which offers a robust program leading to a US high school diploma. WBAIS encompasses two campuses, AIS in Even Yehuda and JAIS in Jerusalem.
In 2008, AIS moved to its current 19-acre campus in Even Yehuda, a residential community approximately 20 kilometers north of Tel Aviv. The purpose-built campus includes four separate divisions, a performing arts building with a 400-seat auditorium, full gym, cafeteria, library and media center, athletic fields, tennis and basketball courts, and an olympic-sized pool.
With a present enrollment of approximately 450 students representing 40 nationalities, WBAIS Israel is a diverse and vibrant community. Approximately 30% of WBAIS students are American, 40% from countries all over the world, and 30% Israeli.
Position Overview
The Director of School Library leads a dynamic, future-ready library program that serves as a central hub for literacy, inquiry, digital fluency, and innovation across an EY–12 international school. The Director ensures that the library environment, instructional program, and digital ecosystem support the school’s mission, foster global citizenship, and meet the changing needs of learners in a rapidly evolving learning landscape.
This role provides strategic leadership for library personnel, resources, facilities, and technologies. The Director collaborates closely with the Director of Technology and other stakeholders to deliver a cohesive, high-quality learning experience for all students. The Director teaches weekly library classes for Early Years through Grade 5, supervises the MS/HS Librarian and Library Assistants, and supports teachers and students across all grade levels in their research, literacy, and digital learning needs.
Vision and Leadership
- Lead the school’s library program, aligning staff, resources, facilities, and technologies with the school’s mission and strategic goals.
- Provide innovative leadership that keeps the program adaptable to emerging technologies, trends, and student needs.
- Collaborate with the Director of Technology and other stakeholders to ensure seamless integration of library programs within the school’s instructional vision and digital ecosystem.
- Support continuity of learning through comprehensive digital resources and adaptable instructional methods during emergencies or remote learning situations.
- Provide professional development to the community on Library and literacy related topics.
- Create a supportive and positive working culture for the library staff.
- Oversee daily library operations including circulation, cataloging, reference services, staffing, and digital platform management.
- Manage the library budget, procurement, vendor contracts, and subscriptions responsibly and strategically.
- Supervise library staff, assistants, volunteers, and the MS/HS Librarian, providing mentorship, direction, and performance evaluation.
- Align the library program with AASL and ISTE frameworks.
- Continuously evaluate and update library policies, curricula, and service models.
- Use data and analytics to measure program impact and report results to school leadership.
- Maintain a modern, welcoming library that serves as a lively learning commons for the schoolwide community.
- Continuously enhance and refine adaptable, student-focused spaces that support reading, research, collaboration, multimedia creation, and information literacy lessons.
- Curate inclusive print and digital collections that support curricular needs and reflect global, multicultural perspectives.
- Build an inclusive library culture that honors diversity and ensures all students feel represented and supported.
- Communicate program impact through newsletters, events, workshops, and presentations.
- Organize library-centered community events (book fairs, author visits, reading celebrations, maker showcases).
- Build partnerships with external libraries, cultural institutions, universities, and global networks.
- Coordinate student enrichment programs such as reading ambassadors, writing clubs, and student media production.
- Create authentic opportunities for student voice, agency, and creativity within library programming.
- Oversee the effective use of digital tools and platforms within the Library program to enhance teaching, learning, and research.
- Collaborate with technology leadership to evaluate, adopt, and implement emerging technologies, including AI tools, that improve access, efficiency, and student engagement.
- Ensure all library technologies, systems, and vendors meet data privacy and security standards.
- Lead innovation initiatives that expand the library’s role as a hub for creativity, multimedia production, and digital exploration.
- Support the development and implementation of AI literacy guidelines, including safe tool use, evaluation of outputs, and ethical application in academic work.
- Maintain a well organized and accessible library website that provides reliable, user-friendly access to digital resources.
- Plan and teach engaging weekly library classes for Early Years through Grade 5 that foster early literacy, story appreciation, digital citizenship, media literacy, and foundational research skills.
- Collaborate with homeroom and specialist teachers to support inquiry-based learning and integrate library resources, both print and digital, into classroom units.
- Teach students to conduct ethical, credible research using both traditional methods and AI-driven tools, including evaluating AI outputs for accuracy, bias, and reliability.
- Guide students in proper documentation and citation of AI tools in academic work.
- Develop and promote clear guidelines for responsible AI use in research, learning, and creative tasks.
- Partner with technology leadership to evaluate AI research tools for safety, privacy, equity, and instructional value.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills with a warm, welcoming, and student-centered approach.
- Proven experience leading, mentoring, and supporting diverse teams, fostering a positive, collaborative, and inclusive work environment.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills for working with students, faculty, and staff across grade levels.
- Strong organizational, project-management, and analytical skills required for multi-layered program oversight.
- Excellent classroom management skills
- High cultural competence and experience supporting multilingual and multicultural learners.
- Deep expertise in library and information science, including collection development, digital curation, children’s literature, and reference services.
- Advanced knowledge of educational technology, AI tools, digital media, and emerging tech trends, including AI
- Familiarity with AASL and ISTE library standards.
- Strong understanding of K–12 curriculum design, literacy development, inquiry-based learning, and instructional integration.
- Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) (required).
- Teaching certification or school librarian credential (required).
- Minimum of five years of successful professional experience as a school librarian in a K–12 setting.
- International school library experience preferred, with demonstrated ability to adapt programs to multicultural contexts.
- Demonstrated experience integrating technology, AI tools, and/or STEAM/makerspace programs into library services.
- Strong English communication skills, both written and oral.

Please note, WBAIS does not sponsor B1 visas. As such, only applicants with valid work permits in Israel, or those eligible for SOFA visa status (U.S. citizens) may be considered for employment.
