Applied Scientist (Chemistry / Materials) – AI Product

Role Overview

We are looking for an experienced Industrial Chemist or Materials Scientist to join our team as a Product Scientist. You will not be working at the bench, you will be working with our engineering team to build Reactor, the first AI-native research platform that thinks like a scientist.

You will be the "Teacher" and the "Voice of Science" inside our product team. Your job is to ensure our AI doesn’t just sound smart, but delivers reliable, useful, and scientifically credible results that working chemists can trust.

Requirements

• Education: MSc in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field.
• Industrial Experience: You have 2-8 years of experience in applied industrial environments (Synthesis, Formulation, Materials, etc.). You know the difference between academic theory and the messy reality of industrial R&D. Note: Pure academic research is less relevant for this role.
• Scientific Reasoning: Proven ability at reading peer-reviewed literature and synthesizing it quickly. You can spot a weak argument or a hallucinated citation a mile away.
• AI & Tech Enthusiasm: You are a "power user" of modern tools. You already use AI (ChatGPT, Claude, etc.) to assist your work and are eager to push the boundaries of what these tools can do.
• Communication: Ability to explain complex chemical concepts to non-scientists (engineers) and document clear scientific rationales.
• Startup Mindset: Ability to work independently, manage your own time in a hybrid environment, and adapt quickly to new challenges.

Bonus:

• PhD is a strong advantage if you have an applied mindset.
• Experience with ELNs or LIMS.
• Basic familiarity with data tools (Python, advanced Excel/Sheets, or data visualization).

Responsibilities

• Model Workflows: Define how an AI should handle complex tasks, from literature review to experimental planning and decision-making.
• Validate AI: Stress-test the system. Detect hallucinations, verify citations, and ensure safety data is accurate.
• Collaborate: Work closely with the CTO and AI Engineers to "teach" the model industrial scientific judgment.
• Define Standards: Create the "gold standard" questions and answers we use to benchmark our AI's performance.
• Advocate for the User: As our in-house scientist, you will shape the user experience to ensure it feels natural for a researcher.
