We are a fast-growing, mission-driven company delivering design, construction management, and design-build services to New York and New Jersey State and local agencies committed to advancing resilience, energy efficiency, and greenhouse gas reduction goals—including those embodied in New York City’s Local Law 97.
We are seeking an experienced Controller to oversee all financial operations of the firm, strengthen internal controls, and support the leadership team in strategic decision-making. This role is ideal for a hands-on professional who thrives in a collaborative, entrepreneurial environment and enjoys improving systems and mentoring others. Prior experience working for construction and/or design professional services firms, utilizing project controls such as Deltek, Unanet, or BQE is preferred.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Management & Reporting
- Oversee the firm’s accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and job-cost accounting.
- Prepare, analyze, and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports.
- Evaluate and improve project and company-level financial performance, identifying trends, variances, and opportunities for cost control.
- Partner with project managers to ensure budget adherence by analyzing expenditures, monitoring margins, and initiating corrective actions as needed.
Policies, Controls & Compliance
- Establish, monitor, and enforce financial policies, procedures, and internal controls that promote accuracy, efficiency, and accountability.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations, including those governing payroll, tax filings, and professional services reporting.
- Coordinate and manage annual financial audits, liaising with external auditors, tax advisors, and government agencies.
- Oversee preparation and support for indirect cost rate and overhead rate audits, ensuring compliance with FAR Part 31, AASHTO, and state agency requirements (e.g., NYSDOT, NJDOT, or similar).
- Maintain strong internal control systems and support SOC 2, ISO 9000, or similar quality assurance frameworks as applicable.
Strategic & Operational Leadership
- Support senior leadership in developing financial forecasts, cash flow models, and long-term strategic plans.
- Manage wages, salaries, and compensation structures in coordination with Human Resources.
- Collaborate with the executive team on staffing and recruiting strategies to attract and retain high-quality employees.
- Contribute to a healthy, collaborative, and accountable team culture by mentoring accounting staff and providing training in financial literacy across departments.
Communication & Collaboration
- Clearly communicate financial performance, risks, and opportunities to company leadership and project teams.
- Resolve financial disputes or discrepancies through proactive, transparent engagement with employees at all levels.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to management on matters affecting profitability, growth, and financial health.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration (CPA or MBA preferred).
- Minimum 7–10 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a professional services, architecture, engineering, or construction management firm.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, and multi-state tax compliance.
- Demonstrated experience with job-cost accounting, project-based financial reporting, and integration between financial and project management systems.
- Proficiency with project and financial control tools such as Unanet, BQE, or Deltek (Vision or Ajera) strongly preferred.
- Experience preparing and managing indirect cost rate submissions and supporting FAR Part 31 or state DOT overhead rate audits.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and analytical skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic, deadline-driven environment.
About You:
You are a proactive, detail-oriented financial professional who thrives in a dynamic, team-driven environment. You bring a blend of technical accounting expertise and strategic insight, and you enjoy helping teams understand the financial side of project delivery. You take pride in improving systems and ensuring compliance—but you’re also comfortable rolling up your sleeves to solve day-to-day operational challenges.
You value transparency, collaboration, and continuous learning. You’re comfortable engaging directly with executives, project managers, and staff at every level, and you can translate complex financial information into clear, actionable guidance. You believe that strong internal controls and good communication build trust—and that sound financial management is a cornerstone of organizational success.
If you enjoy contributing to a purpose-driven company where your expertise will directly influence growth and decision-making, this role will feel like a perfect fit.
