The Prince George’s County Health Department is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill a Disease Control Specialist I/II, grade A18-A21 position, in the Disease Control Division.

About The Position

This is a professional and advanced level position which involves investigative and specialized/technical work performed in order to identify, control, and prevent the occurrence of communicable and vector-borne diseases in the County. Work is performed under the supervision of a higher-level Disease Control Specialist. This is an essential personnel position with the expectation of working during a disaster or emergency event.

The PGCHD works to protect and support the public’s health through numerous services that range from restaurant inspections and disease tracking to care coordination and health promotion. The department is composed of four divisions: Behavioral Health Services, Environmental Health and Disease Control, Family Health Services, and Health and Wellness, supported by the Office of Administration, Office of Human Resources and the Office of the Health Officer. The mandate of the department has been, and will remain, broad. This plan emphasizes improving core functions and operations, including protecting the public from health threats, implementing strategies to support healthy living, and maintaining a focus on vulnerable populations, while developing efficient internal processes to support these activities.

Examples of Work

• Conducts investigations for communicable and vector-borne diseases.
• Conducts interviews and provides appropriate case follow-up.
• Identifies contacts and susceptibles.
• Provides education, recommendations, and information to health care providers and clients on a variety of communicable and zoonotic diseases, including specific disease entities, pre and post exposure rabies treatment issues, testing procedures for humans and animals, etc.
• Collects, evaluates, and interprets epidemiological and statistical data pertaining to investigations and surveillance activities.
• Enters data from surveillance activities into system databases.
• Participates in Public Health Emergency Preparedness activities.
• Collects a variety of human specimens, including performing venipuncture, for laboratory analysis.
  
  

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university, with a major in or a minimum of thirty (30) semester credits in one of the biological, physical and/or social sciences.
  
  

Any equivalent combination of relevant training, education and experience may also be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous community outreach experience.
• Strong, articulate communication ability.
