VP R&D for a Start- Up

VP R&D – AI / Computer Vision / Robotics

We’re looking for a hands-on VP R&D to join an early-stage, fast-growing AI startup developing advanced AI-based computer vision software for automation and robotics.

About the Role

This is a unique opportunity for a technically strong and entrepreneurial leader to build an R&D organization from the ground up.

You’ll start with a small, talented team of around 5 engineers, be closely involved in reviewing and writing code, and gradually scale the team to around 12 within a year as the company grows.

Because the company is still in its early stages, the VP R&D must be hands-on and close to the code — setting technical direction, guiding architecture, and ensuring code quality while laying the foundation for future growth.

You’ll report directly to the CEO and be part of the executive team.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead, mentor, and grow a multidisciplinary R&D team (starting with ~5 engineers and scaling to ~12 within a year).
• Be hands-on and close to the code — review, debug, and occasionally write code when needed.
• Define and execute the company’s R&D and technology strategy.
• Oversee the development of advanced computer vision and AI algorithms for real-world applications.
• Collaborate with hardware teams to design and integrate software and hardware products into cohesive solutions.
• Work closely with Product, Sales, and Operations to align technology with business goals.
• Manage subcontractors and external development partners.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of R&D leadership experience, including building and managing small, high-performing teams.
• Proven hands-on experience in Software Development, Computer Vision, and AI.
• Experience with hardware products — a must.
• Ability and willingness to be involved in coding when necessary.
• Experience with C# is an advantage.
• Deep understanding of algorithms, architectures, and scalable software design.
• Comfortable in a startup environment — agile, execution-oriented, and resourceful.
• Experience in robotics or manufacturing environments is a strong advantage.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• B.Sc. or M.Sc. in Computer Science, Mathematics, or Engineering.
