Vice President of Research & Development

One of our clients, a rapidly growing SaaS company, is looking to hire a VP R&D to lead and scale its R&D organization. The company develops an innovative platform designed for platform engineering teams, serving as an internal developer portal. Their solution consolidates tools and insights into one unified environment, empowering developers to work more independently while ensuring organizational standards are upheld.

Over the past year and a half, the company has grown significantly, expanding from around 30 employees to approximately 150. The R&D team currently consists of about 50 engineers and is expected to double in the near future.

About the Role

The VP R&D will be both a strategic leader and a deeply technical manager, responsible for guiding the engineering organization through this phase of rapid growth. Key responsibilities include:

• Leading an engineering team of ~50 engineers, scaling it to more than double while ensuring high performance, stability, and delivery velocity.
• Building and strengthening a multi-layered leadership structure, including mentoring and growing group leads.
• Defining the company’s long-term technology vision and architecture to anticipate scaling challenges.
• Fostering a culture of technical excellence, accountability, and innovation.
• Collaborating closely with Product, Design, and Go-To-Market teams to ensure strong alignment and impactful results.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience in software engineering and/or DevOps, including at least 5 years in senior leadership roles managing R&D and DevOps teams.
• Proven success in scaling engineering organizations and delivering complex, high-impact projects.
• Strong expertise in cloud-native infrastructure (CI/CD, Kubernetes, multi-cloud environments such as AWS, GCP, and Azure).
• Hands-on background in software development (Go, Python, Java, Node.js) with the ability to understand code and architecture in detail, even if not writing production code.
• Deep knowledge of scalable system architecture and modern development practices.
• Ability to provide clarity and leadership in high-growth, fast-changing environments.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with a passion for building developer-first platforms.
• Experience in Agile, product-led organizations with a focus on developer experience and velocity.
