Overview

At Berries, we’re building one of the first AI-native EHR (Electronic Health Records) designed for mental health professionals. Our mission is to simplify documentation, billing, and clinical workflows so clinicians can focus more on patients and less on paperwork. Already trusted by 9,000+ clinicians, Berries is scaling fast, and we’re now looking for a Tech Lead to join us as a hands-on builder and leader.

We are a lean startup with a small, fast-moving dev team. This role is not about managing layers of managers - it’s about owning the codebase, leading development end-to-end, and writing production code every day. You’ll guide the team, set engineering direction, and ensure we build a robust, scalable, and secure system while staying close to the code.

Berries is also a deeply AI-driven company - both in our product and in how we build. We believe in using AI and context-engineering workflows to give our developers 10x–100x leverage. You’ll be expected to embrace and extend this culture, making sure our team codes faster, smarter, and with more impact by leaning on AI as a core part of our development process.

Responsibilities

• Take full ownership of the codebase and lead development from end to end.
• Lead by example through hands-on coding in Next.js, React, TypeScript, and backend systems.
• Guide system architecture decisions for a multi-component EHR platform, balancing speed with stability, security, and compliance.
• Own database conceptualization and design: modeling new entities, planning migrations, and ensuring scalability and performance.
• Manage and mentor a small, growing team of engineers - keeping it lean but high-performing.
• Take responsibility for our LLM pipelines and AI workflows, ensuring production reliability and scalability.
• Establish and maintain engineering best practices: code quality, testing, CI/CD, error tracking, observability.
• Collaborate closely with product and founders to translate clinician needs into robust, usable technical solutions.
• Own technical debt management and ensure sustainable scaling.
• Drive a culture of AI-augmented development, ensuring every engineer leverages AI to accelerate output and quality.
  
  

Requirements

• 4+ years of professional software development experience, with a strong track record of building production systems end to end.
• 2+ years of team leadership experience, guiding small engineering teams while staying hands-on.
• Deep expertise in Next.js, React, and TypeScript, with strong backend experience (Node.js, serverless, or similar).
• Strong background in database design and scalability, including migrations, query optimization, and performance tuning.
• Proven experience with complex product architectures, ideally in domains like EHRs, CRMs, or other workflow-heavy platforms.
• Familiarity with LLM/AI workflows in production, or willingness to learn and own this area.
• Solid understanding of security, compliance, and data privacy (HIPAA or similar frameworks a strong plus).
• Experience establishing engineering best practices: testing, CI/CD, observability, and error tracking.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate closely with product and business stakeholders.
• Entrepreneurial mindset: thrives in a lean startup environment, able to balance speed and long-term sustainability.
