Senior Software Engineer position

Scala Biodesign is developing an advanced computational platform for protein design to meet the rising demand for protein-based products in various markets, from therapeutics and enzymes for sustainable chemistry to FoodTech and others. We streamline the complex process of transforming natural proteins into commercial products by optimizing properties like potency, cost-of-goods, and resistance to industrial conditions. The basis for Scala’s solution was developed at the Weizmann Institute of Science. The technology showed success in solving highly challenging protein-engineering problems across diverse applications, including vaccines, drug development, biofuel production, and waste decomposition. Scala was founded in 2022 with investments from top-tier VCs.

We are looking for a senior software engineer to join our tight-knit team of protein designers and software engineers; a team player who is excited to work in a small startup atmosphere and take part in all aspects of running a biotech company that turns scientific breakthroughs into valuable products with a positive impact on humankind.

Responsibilities

As part of our team you will be involved in the development of cutting-edge computational protein design methods to address challenging protein engineering problems:

• Ideate, design and code well tested code libraries and algorithms.
• Automate, optimize and troubleshoot our internal pipelines for computational protein design.
• Create and manage cloud infrastructure as code.
• Support the execution of computational design projects in collaboration with our protein design team.
• Build the infrastructure for our future engineering growth.

Qualifications

Required

• BSc in bioinformatics or software engineering + Biology/Chemistry.
• 5+ years of experience in Python programming.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills; a team player who is both fun to work with and able to lead vast changes in software components.
• Fast learner and proven ability to master new domains.
• Excellent time management, can-do attitude, pushing to get the job done.
• Enthusiasm about biology, proteins and tight-communication with scientists from these fields.

Preferred

• Advantage: experience in biotech companies.
• Advantage: experience with cloud-based pipelines running at scale.
• Advantage: experience with Rosetta macromolecular modeling software or other computational structural biology tools.
• Advantage: experience with developing and applying machine learning models on biological datasets.
