Head of Physical Systems Engineering

One of our clients - A fast-growing deep-tech startup in the fiber-optic sensing domain is looking for a hands-on technical leader to head the development of its core sensing platform.

If you have a background in physics, electro-optics, or complex sensing systems, and a proven track record of leading multidisciplinary hardware development from concept to production — this is an opportunity to shape an industry-disrupting product.

What You’ll Do

• Lead a multidisciplinary hardware R&D team (physics, optics, electronics, mechanics).
• Own end-to-end development of advanced fiber-optic sensing systems — from concept to production.
• Drive system-level integration of optical, electrical, mechanical, and thermal subsystems.
• Be ~50% hands-on: designing experiments, building prototypes, conducting validation and debugging.
• Collaborate closely with algorithm, software, and field engineering teams to bring systems to real-world environments.
• Research and prototype new sensing capabilities leveraging the physics of light and fiber-optic systems.

Must-Have Requirements

• Advanced degree (MSc or PhD) in experimental physics, electrical engineering, electro-optics, or a closely related field.
• 5+ years of hands-on experience with laser systems, fiber optics, or complex physical sensing systems.
• Proven experience in leading multidisciplinary hardware development and system integration.
• Team leadership experience – minimum 2–3 engineers, ideally including physicists or system developers.
• Deep understanding of system architecture combining optics, electronics, mechanics, and software.
• Demonstrated experience in taking systems from proof-of-concept to production, including resolving manufacturing issues.
• Hands-on experience with physical experiments, prototyping, and lab-to-field transitions.
• Strong technical documentation and communication skills in English.

Nice to Have

• Experience working in an early-stage or scaling deep-tech startup.
• Previous role in a research lab or applied R&D institute (e.g., defense, photonics, or sensing).
• Background in optomechanics or thermal design of enclosures.
• Familiarity with working with contract manufacturers or supply chains.
