Spines is an AI-based platform transforming book publishing for authors. Our AI-driven platform enhances the publishing journey by automating complex workflows and supporting authors in delivering their vision efficiently.

We’re seeking Head of R&D for our research, development, and infrastructure efforts as we scale. This position will be instrumental in aligning R&D initiatives with our strategic goals, fostering cross-functional collaboration, and ensuring our platform’s security, performance, and scalability.

Role Overview

The Head of R&D will be responsible for managing the R&D team, leading the technical roadmap, and ensuring secure, high-performance solutions aligned with product goals. Working closely with the CTO, development, product, and data science teams, this role will balance hands-on involvement, such as code reviews and cloud infrastructure oversight, with high-level strategic planning. The Head of R&D will also champion security protocols and infrastructure integrity to protect our users' data and privacy.

Requirements

• 6+ years in R&D or engineering roles, and at least 4 years in a management role.
• Proven experience leading product development teams, with a strong grasp of end-to-end development, security practices, and infrastructure management.
• Demonstrated ability to balance hands-on technical involvement with strategic planning in a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment.
• Proficiency in Node.js and React, with a strong understanding of full-stack development and best practices.
• Strong knowledge of cloud infrastructure (Azure/AWS/GC), DevOps, and best practices for securing cloud-based platforms.
• Proficient in modern software development practices, including code reviews, testing, and deployment processes.
• Familiarity with secure coding practices, data protection, and industry compliance standards.
• Familiarity with WordPress/PHP is beneficial.
• Ability to break down business goals into actionable R&D roadmaps.
• Proven ability to communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Experience managing budgets, resource allocation, and setting measurable goals to ensure department and company success.
