As we scale, our client is looking for a hands-on VP of R&D to lead the technical strategy, drive development execution, and build a world-class engineering team.

Position Summary

We’re seeking a highly experienced, technically deep, and execution-focused VP of R&D to lead our product development efforts. This individual will be responsible for building and managing the R&D function, including recruiting top talent, setting technical direction, and ensuring timely and high-quality product delivery in a fast-paced startup environment.

This is a hands-on leadership role—ideal for someone who is not only a strong people manager but also comfortable diving into code and architecture when needed.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and scale our clients' R&D team across software and systems engineering functions

• Set the technical vision and roadmap in collaboration with product and executive teams

• Define development processes, best practices, and architectural standards

• Hire, mentor, and retain high-performing engineering talent

• Actively participate in design and code reviews; contribute to architectural decisions

• Coordinate efforts across teams building:

o On-appliance services

o Cloud-based applications

o Desktop applications

• Ensure technical alignment across hardware-influenced product lines, working closely with hardware teams (not developing hardware, but integrating with it)

• Champion a culture of rapid iteration, operational excellence, and continuous improvement

Requirements

• Minimum 5 years of experience leading and managing R&D or software engineering teams

• Proven track record in fast-paced startup environments

• Strong hands-on experience with C++ and Python

• Familiarity or hands-on experience with React is a strong plus

• Experience delivering on-device (appliance), desktop, and cloud applications

• Solid understanding of hardware-software interfacing—while not developing hardware directly, you’ve worked on systems with embedded or physical component integration

• Strong architectural and system design skills

• Demonstrated ability to build from zero and scale R&D organizations

• Excellent leadership, communication, and collaboration skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Background in products involving embedded systems, robotics, or consumer hardware

• Experience managing distributed or hybrid teams

• Exposure to DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines

• Graduate degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
