What you will be doing:

As an Embedded Software Engineer in our PHY team, you will design, implement, and optimize real-time firmware that drives the physical layer of Sony’s 5G cellular-IoT modem. Working shoulder-to-shoulder with system, RF, DSP, algorithm, and ASIC engineers, you’ll transform cutting-edge communication and positioning research into production-ready code. Your work will enable secure connectivity and accurate location services for millions of low-power IoT devices worldwide.

On a typical day:

On a typical day, you might debug issues coming from clients' devices, review overnight regression logs, design a new feature for an upcoming firmware release, flash experimental firmware onto development boards, and pair-program with a teammate to squash a tricky interrupt-latency bug.

Responsibilities:

• Develop and maintain embedded C written firmware that controls baseband signal processing, high-speed interfaces, and RF front-end functions.
• Define and implement real-time control flows, interrupt handlers for 5G NR-RedCap/LTE-M PHY features.
• Bring up new silicon: debug with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and JTAG probes.
• Implement algorithms defined by and in collaboration with ALG teams.
• Integrate GNSS and other positioning technologies to provide hybrid cellular + satellite location capabilities.
• Contribute to code reviews, CI pipelines, and on-target automated testing to ensure robustness and maintainability.
• Analyze performance bottlenecks and optimize CPU, memory, and power consumption to meet stringent IoT constraints.
  
  

• BSc in Electrical, Computer, or Communication Engineering.
• 5-10 years of hands-on firmware development in real-time embedded environments.
• Proficiency in C for resource-constrained devices.
• Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
  
  

• Solid understanding of digital signal processing and baremetal concepts.
• Advantage: experience with GNSS or other location systems.
• Advantage: familiarity with modem architectures and wireless standards such as GSM, LTE, 5G NR, or Wi-Fi.
• Advantage: scripting and data-analysis skills in Python and MATLAB.
