Staff Engineer - Agent Runtimes

The Datadog Agent is software that runs on customer infrastructure and supports a wide range of platforms. It collects observability data from hosts and sends them to Datadog, where our customer can analyze their monitoring and performance data.

The Agent Runtimes team’s mission is to develop and own architectures as well as building blocks of the Agent to ensure consistency, modularity, maintainability, scalability, and stability of the Agent as the number of teams and contributors grows while at the same time maintaining a “single Agent” user-facing experience. Ownership covers dynamic and static modularity as well as related Agent-as-a-platform components needed to support this vision.

Datadog’s Staff Engineers are our technical leaders operating at the forefront of technology, building solutions that take us through at least our next five years of growth. They do this in three major ways:

• As individual contributors, they bring world class technical abilities to deliver industry leading systems in areas such as data visualization, virtual runtime profiling, planet scale streaming, and others.
• As technical leaders they bring experienced technical breadth and communication skills to tackling design and architectural problems spanning the organization, charting the right course, then leading the delivery.
• In both roles, they participate in the staff engineering community and help us learn from what the industry is doing and what we've built before, and so improve company-wide standards around software and systems engineering.

What You’ll Do:

• Design and implement the internal Agent libraries and frameworks that allow Agent teams to build their features with a simple and consistent user experience (logging, hostname resolution, health API, etc), connect their Agent components to Datadog’s intakes, and easily communicate with other Agent components.
• Develop and maintain core functionality for the runtimes that the Agent uses (Go, Python, etc).
• Investigate, develop, and maintain core architectures that allow the Agent to be small, fast, and composable.
• Solve complex cross team projects/problems with multiple levels of stakeholders.
• Investigate and implement new approaches for reducing the Agent footprint and increasing overall performance.
• Lead and guide other engineers in their growth and development.
• Collaborate closely with partner teams that integrate and depend on the Agent to provide critical capabilities to their customers.
• Support the growth of the Agent adoption and featureset.
  
  

Who You Are:

• You are a significantly experienced software engineer with an extensive background in backend engineering (Go, Python, Rust, C++...) and software performance optimization.
• With a strong experience of 10y+ (at least), you have been exposed to the challenge of creating and delivering on-premise/packaged solutions with a high-performance and customer-centric approach.
• You enjoy connecting with teams and people in your ecosystem and have already demonstrated the ability to lead large cross-team initiatives in an environment where security, speed, and reliability are first-order concerns.
• You are able to bring best practices from across the world of software engineering and adapt them to the Agent.
• You are a strong communicator, especially on complex technical topics.
• You enjoy mentoring and coaching other engineers.
