Our team at IBM Research is looking for an outstanding advanced degree student (M.Sc. or Ph.d.) for a summer internship position to drive forward the state-of-the-art research in the above areas.

Your Role And Responsibilities

• Design and develop complex algorithms for addressing problems requiring high performance computation, such as complex mathematical optimization problems, integrating generative AI, tensor based computing, classical computing and quantum computing.
• Prove theoretical results, for example, based on complexity analysis, showing which paradigm is the most suitable for each algorithm component.
• Design, implement and analyze empirical experiments for these algorithms
• Demonstrate scientific eminence by publishing the results of your work in leading scientific journals and conferences and by filing patents.
• Advocate for your ideas and collaborate with other research scientists and engineers to design the best solution.
• Possible application of work to real world business scenarios.

• Studying towards an advanced degree (M.Sc. or Ph.D.) in Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Operations Research, or other related scientific discipline.
• Strong background in one or more of the following:
• Generative AI including theoretical understanding of LLMs and/or transformers as used to implement algorithms such as reasoning.
• Tensor based computation and algorithms
• Classical complexity analysis
• Quantum computing algorithms to solve difficult computational problems.
• Knowledge in combinatorial optimization an/or applying reinforcement learning to generate solutions to combinatorial optimization problems is a plus (although not mandatory)
• Demonstrated ability in proving theoretical results, and designing, implementing, and analyzing numerical experiments.
• Working proficiency in Python.
• Good communication skills and ability to work in a collaborative team environment
