Project Overview

The Sorkin Lab at Tel Aviv University invites applications for a doctoral candidate (DC) position to explore how membrane composition and phase separation influence condensate formation and localization. This project employs AFM imaging and force spectroscopy to characterize condensate nucleation, with further investigation into the role of membrane tension using photo-responsive lipids. Outcomes will enhance understanding of condensate-membrane interactions in both synthetic and cellular models, offering new strategies for targeting condensates to specific membrane locations.

Collaborative Opportunities:

The position involves secondments in the following labs:

• CSIC (Rivas Group): Training in protein condensate preparation
• Max Planck Institute (Dimova Group): Preparation of asymmetric membranes with photo-responsive lipids

as well as additional training and collaboration opportunities within the network.

Candidate Requirements

Qualifications

• Essential: MSc (or equivalent) in Biophysics, Physics, Chemistry, Bioengineering, or related field.

Knowledge & Experience

• Essential: Previous research in one of the listed disciplines.
• Desirable: Experience with AFM or microscopy techniques (optical, confocal), and knowledge in areas such as membrane biophysics, biomolecular condensates, lipid chemistry, colloidal physical chemistry, or soft matter.

Skills & Competencies

• Essential: Proficiency in English (for non-native speakers, evidence of competency is required).
• Desirable: Demonstrated interest, aptitude, and research experience relevant to the project’s disciplines.
