Senior Data and Business Intelligence Engineer

Data is at the heart of everything we do, and as such, we are building a multi-disciplined data team to help us achieve our business goals. We are looking for a cross-sectional skill set covering Data and Business Intelligence.

You will drive value for our customers and business functions through effective modeling, and data transformations by leading the delivery of strategic data solutions. You must also be able to establish a resilient data architecture and engineering foundations while supporting junior members of the data engineering team. In order to help drive our data-driven decision making within our growing retail organization, there will also be a responsibility to lead the design, development, and maintenance of business intelligence solutions that empower our business stakeholders to make informed decisions.

Key Responsibilities:

• Leading the design and orchestration of modularized, automated, event-driven data engineering pipelines and data modeling approaches which are resilient and future proof.
• Building in quality by design into data engineering practices, enabling a scalable and flexible data architecture and feature rich dataset to support the wider Data function and the entire business.
• Implementing modern code development and data engineering orchestration strategies, as well as providing oversight to more junior data engineers.
• Being the gatekeeper for customer data, aware of our usage and alignment to data privacy standards
• Working closely with our Lead Data and ML Engineers to drive the adoption of DevOps and modern code development practices across the Data function.
• Collaborating with Quality and Software Engineering and System teams to drive cross-function visibility and reduction of technical debt across the teams.
• Collaborating with business stakeholders to gather and translate requirements into effective BI solutions. Understanding and translating those requirements to more junior members of the team
• Designing, developing, and maintaining BI reports, dashboards, and data visualizations using various BI tools and platforms. Responsible for setting best practice in these areas and coaching junior members.
• Ensuring the accuracy and reliability of data by performing data quality checks, troubleshooting data issues, and resolving discrepancies. Supporting other teams to ensure their data quality is visible and easily monitored
• Analyzing and interpreting complex data sets to identify trends, patterns, and actionable insights. Leading edge insights to deliver to the business to move the needle in the relevant area of focus
• Ensuring data quality and integrity in BI solutions
• Compliance with data privacy and security standards

Qualifications:

• Demonstrable experience of critical thinking, communication and problem-solving ability.
• Experience working in an e-commerce/retail market would be beneficial.
• Strong stakeholder management skills: working collaboratively with Data Science, System, DevOps, Data and Software Engineering teams.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders (Data Engineering to the Business)
• Hands on with Infrastructure-as-Code and data engineering in GCP.
• Extensive expertise of RDBMS, Python, Hadoop, SQL or Pyspark.
• Experience of ETL/ELT technical design, automated testing of engineering pipelines, quality assurance and documentation.
• Proven experience of data warehousing, data wrangling and data modeling approaches.
• Proven experience coaching junior members of data engineering teams and supporting their skills development.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in BI development, preferably within the retail industry
• Strong proficiency in SQL and data modeling concepts
• Strong Experience working with BI tools such as Looker, Power BI or Tableau
• Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret complex data sets

Bonus points:

• Experience producing recommender engines and ensemble ML in Google Cloud
• Experience or exposure to managing ML Infrastructure costs and operational reliability in the cloud.
• Willingness to learn new tools and techniques; proactively keeping up to date with latest thinking and practices in the data science space.
• Able to establish what does/doesn’t align to business/functional strategies/priorities and communicate dependencies clearly.
• Experience with the Google Cloud Stack (BigQuery, Dataform etc)
• Experience working with CI/CD pipelines through Github
• Experience working in a large data transformation / migration
• Knowledge of advanced analytics techniques, such as predictive modeling and machine learning
• Exposure to cloud-based data storage and processing platforms, such as AWS, Google Cloud, or Microsoft Azure
