The Academic Department Chair for the Business Program serves as the chief administrative and academic officer for the business department. Responsibilities and authority include delivering academic programs, managing departmental personnel, budgeting, and resource management, all aligned with business departmental, college, and university strategic plans. This role reports to the Chief Academic Officer (CAO) and the College’s Vice President.
Key Responsibilities:
- Department Leadership:
- Vision and Strategy: Collaborate with business faculty, students, and staff to develop and sustain a long-term vision for the business department that aligns with the missions of the business department, college, and university.
- Liaison: Act as a liaison between the business department and other institutional units.
- Compliance: Ensure business departmental adherence to College, University, System, and State regulations.
- Department Curriculum:
- Curriculum Oversight: Supervise the development and revision of the business departmental curriculum.
- Program Review: Regularly review and assess academic programs offered by the business department.
- Program Initiation: Propose and initiate new business academic programs and projects as needed.
- Department Operations:
- Course Scheduling: Manage business course schedules to meet program and student needs.
- Instructor Assignments: Oversee the assignment of business instructors.
- Catalog Management: Review and update business departmental information in the university catalog.
- Personnel Management:
- Recruitment and Supervision: Recruit, appoint, and supervise business faculty and staff.
- Performance Evaluation: Evaluate the performance of business faculty and staff.
- Professional Development: Support and oversee the development of business faculty and staff.
- Grievance Review: Address faculty and staff grievances within the business department.
- Faculty Responsibilities:
- Teaching: Teach at least two business classes per cohort within the MA in Education – STEM concentration and facilitate at least two business courses in the BA in Education.
- Research and Scholarship: Engage in research and scholarly activities within the business discipline.
- Service: Participate and support business departmental faculty in university and community service activities.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Departmental Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of the business department’s programs, policies, procedures, operations, and management.
- Accreditation: Familiarity with accreditation requirements, especially those of the New England Commission of Higher Education.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Educational Background: Earned MBA, PhD preferred, or equivalent in training, ability, and/or experience in a business field.
- Research and Academic Achievement: Evidence of research in the business field and holding the rank of associate professor or higher.
- Leadership Experience: Proven leadership experience within educational institutions.
- Teaching Excellence: Demonstrated successful teaching experience.
- Communication Skills: Excellent communication and human relations skills.
