Histology Tech - Neurology - PRN/Flexi

Position Description

Flexi/PRN - Work schedule varies

To perform a variety of routine histological procedures related to preparation of tissue for microscopic

examination by a pathologist. To perform procedures including embedding, microtomy, staining, and

other special techniques needed for diagnosis. May perform high-complexity testing and grossing of

specimens.

Position Requirements

Associate’s degree and twenty-four (24) credits of college coursework with emphasis in biology & chemistry, and/or two (2) years of applicable laboratory experience require. BS degree in biological sciences or Medical Assistant degree preferred. Formal training in an accredited histology technology program leading to an Associate of Science Degree preferred. At least one (1) year of experience working in a clinical anatomic pathology laboratory preferred. Prior experience working with physicians and patients in ambulatory or inpatient settings preferred.

Licenses / Certifications / Registrations

Currently certified or eligible for certification as a Histotechnician (HT) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) required. If eligible for certification, must be certified within two (2) years of date of hire.If working in the Department of Neurology: Current histotechnician certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology is preferred but not necessary initially (certification is expected within 3 years of

employment at UAB).
