Role Description
We have 2 PhD positions fully funded buy joint German-Israeli research grant. The doctoral candidates will participate in a research project introducing a novel subclass of architected materials, specifically lattice structures. The principal aim of this proposal is to develop a micropolar (Cosserat-type) theory for mechanical metamaterials based on uniform polyhedra interconnected by chiral and antichiral links.
First position is associated with development of theoretical discrete and continuum models for architected Cosserat-type metamaterials. Second successful candidate will perform the computational analysis and additionally contribute to the design of topologies for various polyhedral metamaterials characterized by prominent auxetic and chiral mechanical responses.
Qualifications
- Master's degree with thesis in a field of Mechanical/Aerospace/Civil Engineering, Applied Math or related field
- Proficiency in mechanics of solids/mechanics of materials
- Experience in FEM-based modeling
- For the position in theoretical mechanics: knowledge of Matlab/Mathematica/Maple would be an advantage
- For the position in computational mechanics: coding (Python/C/C++) would be an advantage
- Strong research and analytical skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and in a team
- Organizational and time management skills
Group Description
MultiScale Mechanics of Solids group of Dr. Igor Berinskii has a proven experience in discrete and continuum mechanics. He develops analytical and computational models to describe the effective mechanical properties of metamaterials of regular and random microstructure. Our publications cover mechanics of auxetic metamaterials, origami-like structures, random fiber network and granular metamaterials.
