Head of System Design (Urban Transport Systems and Railways)

For a key Institutional Engineering company operating in the construction of large metropolitan infrastructures, We are looking for a Design Manager (Urban Transport Systems and Railways).

The selected candidate will collaborate within the Mobility Systems Department, reporting to the in line manager, mainly dealing with the design, technical verification of projects, field activities and factory tests in the following specialized areas, applied to urban transport systems (subways, light railways, tramways) and railways, with – inter alia – the following responsibilities:

• Providing technical guidance, governance and day-today coordination of systems design team and perform design review activities for contractual conformance
• Drafting and reviewing the status and adequacy of the design review plan to ensure continuing suitability and effectiveness
• Receiving, distributing, and tracking design reviews and design submittals for the duration of design and construction
• Contributing to the successful delivery of the project by leading and coordinating cross-discipline interfaces from a technical design perspective
• Ensuring appropriate processes and skills are in place to assure the safety and integrity of all engineering deliverables and projects
• Developing and managing a large multidisciplinary team of design engineers to raise the level of their technical capability and understanding
• Regularly engaging with the project senior management team when determining the allocation of resources (design/engineering) to support the project and initiating changes when necessary
• Providing leadership, direction and guidance to staff to ensure quality technical services are provided that meet both the project and client requirements
• Identifying and managing the delivery of information required; monitoring their progress against agreed delivery dates
• Identifying, reviewing and advocating changes (variations) to designs in terms of technical capability, cost effectiveness, scope, durability and maintainability of design solutions

The Ideal candidate has the following requirements:

• Master's Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or equivalent;
• Professional experience of at least 15 years in Engineering Companies or Design Firms, for activities similar to those described above
• Proven experience in the design of railway systems for infrastructure projects, preferably with experience in the rail industry or related fields in an international context
• Solid understanding of railway signaling, communications, electrification, and traction power systems
• Mastery of the English language is required, with excellent ability to read technical texts and a good ability to write and express oneself. Knowledge of other languages is also an element of evaluation
• Predisposition to interpersonal relationships, attitude to teamwork, dynamism, autonomy, initiative and tenacity. Good knowlege of international technical codes and regulations. identifying, reviewing and advocating changes (variations) to designs in terms of technical capability, cost effectiveness, scope, durability and maintainability of design solutions, proven experience in the design of railway systems for infrastructure projects, preferably with experience in the rail industry or related fields in an international context, solid understanding of railway signaling, communications, electrification, and traction power systems.
