Grant Writer/ Researcher

The Grant Writer/ Researcher will identify, define and develop funding sources to support existing and planned program activities of our non-profit journalism venture Orato World Media Foundation, as well as lead the development, writing, and  submission of grant proposals to funding agencies.

Primary responsibilities include:

Identifying potential funding sources and grant opportunities internationally 

with mission-alignment potential.

Conducting deep research on identified prospects including overarching 

mission, individual programmatic goals, the most up-to-date areas of funder 

focus based on readily available information and press, previous grants 

awarded in related industries including benchmarking award amounts, and 

key contact people.

Providing prospect summaries to Orato’s administrative team. Meeting 

regularly with Orato leadership, tracking current and next steps for all funder 

prospects, tracking timelines and milestones, and reporting regularly.

Once an area of focus is identified with a funder prospect, working with Orato

team members to determine the general scope of the ask and draft LOIs, 

working with the team throughout the editing process. Once a brief is 

prepared, either submitting approved LOI or using that information to 

establish point of contact with the funder.

Aggressively working toward establishing meeting opportunities for Orato’s 

leadership with funders either in person, by phone, or virtually. Regularly 

pursuing individual contacts at a host of funding organizations.

Identifying meetings, conferences and events where funders may gather and 

informing Orato’s leadership of these opportunities well in advance of their 

occurrence.

Together with support from Orato’s teams, maintaining main responsibility for

writing and submitting all grants. Generating high-quality proposals, 

narratives, applications, budgets, and supporting documents according to the

requirements and guidelines of the funding agency.

Coordinating and following-up on the progress of submitted LOIs and 

proposals.

Maintaining budget, goal tracking, and reporting documents for Orato and as 

required by the funder once a grant is awarded. Creating task calendars for 

each grant and securing necessary data on an ongoing basis.

Serving as a liaison to all funding agencies and organizations

Other duties as assigned may include periodic support in establishing point 

of contact with individuals of influence in media, public relations or other 

related industries which may provide valuable stakeholders, partners, board 

members, or interview subjects for Orato

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree preferred in a related field

Minimum five years grant writing experience required, preferably with a non-

profit media focus

Experience should demonstrate a proven track record of securing new 

funding opportunities; comprehensive knowledge of research, and the ability 

to distinguish and identify opportunities for funding news, media, and 

democracy initiatives

Ability to work effectively under pressure

Superior writing skills

Highly organized with the ability to implement systems and follow-up 

processes

Proficiency in research, interpreting, and analyzing diverse data

Experience preferred working in a remote or hybrid environment

Mostly uninterrupted access to internet and the ability to meet with 

stakeholders globally, requiring flexibility of scheduling for various time 

zones

 Motivated self-starter with the ability to work collaboratively and 

independently with purpose and accuracy in a fast-paced environment.
