Atmosphere-Ocean-Hydrology Technician/Modeler/Systems Administrator 

Job Description

The Fredy and Nadine Herrmann Institute of Earth Sciences of the Hebrew University is hiring an Atmosphere-Ocean-Hydrology Modeler. The successful applicant will work on basic and applied research projects in climate dynamics, meteorology, hydrology and oceanography. He/she will participate in the design, implementation, and evaluation of a variety of numerical models as a member of collaborative, multidisciplinary project teams. The position requires a creative, dependable individual who can work on multiple projects simultaneously, who can carefully scrutinize the technical work performed by him/herself and others to ensure high-quality results, and who can leverage his/her technical and scientific skill to support the computational needs across the organization.

The modeler/researcher will be responsible for:

• Installing and configuring parallelized models of Earth's ocean and atmosphere on a high-performance computing architecture; 
• Implementation of new routines in existing numerical models (such as CESM, WRF, GFDL FMS, MITgcm) and radiative transfer/scattering models (OSOAA, ADDA, MSTM, IF-DDAM);
• Designing and executing experiments; 
• Training and supporting students in atmospheric and oceanic modeling;
• Co-authoring research papers in academic journals and writing technical reports;
• Supporting the computational needs of students and research staff.

Required Qualifications

• Significant programming experience in Fortran and either Matlab or Python, and strong Unix scripting skills.
• At least one year of experience in numerical modeling on high-performance computing architectures (e.g., MPI and OpenMp).
• Bachelor’s degree in Earth Science, Computer Science, or a related field.

The position is to be filled as soon as possible and will remain open until filled. This is a full-time (100%) position. The salary is according to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem salary scale.
