Technical Writer - SaaS Help Docs

DevDocs is in search of an adept Technical Writer to fill a new position for a well-established client. The primary objective of this role is to bridge the knowledge gaps that currently exist between their technology solutions and their customers’ audit, risk, and compliance challenges. Your responsibilities will include crafting Help documents and User Guides to facilitate their audience’s path to success. To excel in this position, you must possess the ability to transcend mere buttons and features. You will be anticipated to work closely with the development and product teams, ensuring lucid communication and effective project management. We require someone who is highly engaged, collaborative, and capable of seamlessly integrating into the team, while actively seeking out company-embedded knowledge through questions and exploration. We are in need of a writer who can start immediately, displaying the determination to hit the ground running as soon as contracts are finalized. The only hard skill requirement is 3+ years experience with MadCap Flare. Experience with similar tools such as FrameMaker and RoboHelp are appreciated but necessary.

Key Responsibilities

• Establish a scalable and maintainable content strategy that bridges traditional gaps between authors, information, and the people who need that information, using your extensive experience and expertise.
• Research, write, edit, and publish technical content, working with product managers, UX designers, developers, QA, and localization team members.
• Empower users, administrators, and developers with relevant content that answers their actual questions and improves product engagement. Validate these efforts through audience research and data analysis, helping you build a roadmap of content investments that are driven by the needs of your readers and the larger business context.
• Mentor other technical writers to help them grow their own skills.
• Set project schedules and quality standards, driving guidelines for style, accessibility, and translation.

Required Experience/Skills

• At least 5 years of experience, some of which was in an agile/SaaS software development environment.
• Fluency in English with excellent written and oral communication skills. You must be able to explain complex concepts with plain and simple English.
• Required experience authoring in MadCap Flare.
• Demonstrated proficiency writing topic-based, single-sourced web content using HTML, XML, and CSS.
• Experience with standard planning, tracking, and help authoring tools, like Jira, Confluence, Flare, Git, GitHub, Snagit, and Visio.
• Familiarity with building in-app onboarding programs and tutorials using tools like Pendo or WalkMe.
• Experience reading and writing code samples in Python, Ruby, JavaScript, or another language. This role has a developer audience, so it isn't suitable for technical writers without basic coding skills. Python knowledge or the ability to learn Python is the current requirement.
• Demonstrated proficiency working with localization teams to ensure systems and content are localizable.
• The ability to actively seek out new opportunities to make strategic improvements, communicate value, and develop meaningful relationships.
• A passion to understand how people process and use complex information.
• A desire to challenge yourself and work across functions and departments to help us create content that is a core part of, and not an addendum to, someone's journey through our products.
• A degree in English, computer science, or a related field, or a technical communication certificate, is desirable.
